How iOS 12 Tracks FaceTime Cellular Data Usage

Apple’s iOS 12 provides native tools to monitor and control how much cellular data FaceTime consumes, separating total consumption metrics from individual call details. In this operating system version, the Cellular settings menu serves as a central hub for aggregate data tracking and network access control, while granular, call-by-call data usage is integrated directly into your call history.

Aggregate Data Tracking in Cellular Settings

To view cumulative FaceTime data usage in iOS 12:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Cellular (or Mobile Data, depending on your region).
  3. Scroll down to the list of apps under the "Cellular Data" section.
  4. Locate FaceTime.

Directly beneath the FaceTime label, iOS 12 displays the total amount of cellular data the app has consumed. This measurement reflects data used exclusively over cellular networks, excluding any calls placed or received over Wi-Fi.

Controlling Network Access

Next to FaceTime in the Cellular settings menu, there is a dedicated toggle switch. Switching this off revokes FaceTime’s permission to use cellular data entirely. When disabled, FaceTime will only function when your device is connected to a Wi-Fi network, preventing accidental data overages.

The "Current Period" Mechanism

The data figure shown beneath FaceTime is tied to the "Current Period" metric located at the top and bottom of the Cellular menu. Unlike some carrier-synced tracking systems, iOS 12 does not automatically reset this period at the start of your monthly billing cycle.

To track monthly usage accurately:

  • Scroll to the very bottom of the Cellular screen.
  • Tap Reset Statistics.
  • Note the date and time, which will update beneath the button to show when the tracking period began.

Checking Data Usage for Individual Calls

While the Cellular settings menu provides the overall data tally, it does not display a per-call breakdown. To view data usage for a specific FaceTime call:

  1. Open the FaceTime app or the Phone app.
  2. Navigate to the Recents tab.
  3. Find the specific call and tap the info icon ("i") next to the contact or phone number.
  4. The details screen will show the call's timestamp, duration, whether it was incoming or outgoing, and the exact amount of data used (for example, "FaceTime Video, 14.2 MB").
