How iOS 12 Suggests Sharing Photos by Event
iOS 12 introduced intelligent sharing suggestions in the Photos app, using on-device machine learning to prompt users to share pictures with friends who attended the same events. By analyzing timestamps, geographic locations, facial recognition data, and calendar entries, the operating system identifies specific gatherings, matches attendees with your contact list, and simplifies the sharing process. It even encourages reciprocal sharing so everyone leaves an event with a complete set of memories.
On-Device Intelligence and Event Grouping
The system begins by analyzing your photo library locally on the device using the Neural Engine and advanced computer vision. Rather than treating photos as isolated files, iOS 12 clusters them into distinct events based on time and location metadata. When multiple photos are taken within a concentrated time frame and at a specific GPS coordinate—such as a birthday party, concert, or trip—the operating system identifies the cluster as a single event.
Identifying Attendees via Facial Recognition and Contacts
Once an event is identified, iOS 12 analyzes the visual content of the photos:
- Facial Recognition: The system scans the faces appearing in the event's photos and matches them against the People album configured in your Photos app.
- Contact Matching: When recognized faces match individuals tagged in your contacts, iOS 12 marks those people as event attendees.
- Calendar and Contextual Clues: The system can cross-reference the date, time, and location with your Calendar app to identify invited guests or meetings, adding confidence to who was present.
Delivering Suggestions in the "For You" Tab
Photos deemed significant appear in the "For You" tab under "Sharing Suggestions." When you open this section, iOS 12 presents a curated collection of photos from the event alongside recommendations of who to send them to. Users retain full control and can review the suggested recipients, select or deselect specific photos, and approve the share before anything is sent.
Reciprocal Sharing via iCloud Links
Photos are shared using temporary iCloud Links, which allow recipients to view and download full-resolution images regardless of what platform or device they use.
If the recipient is also running iOS 12 or later, the feature works both ways. Upon receiving the link, the recipient's device analyzes its own photo library for photos taken at the exact same time and location. If matching photos are found, the recipient receives a prompt asking if they would like to share their own photos from the event back with the original sender, ensuring both parties have all the captured memories without manual searching.
