How iOS 12 Manages Animoji Video Storage
Apple’s iOS 12 treats saved Animoji and Memoji video clips as standard video files, storing and managing them depending on whether they remain within the Messages app or are saved directly to the device’s Photos library. By integrating these clips into standard iOS media frameworks, the operating system allows users to leverage existing storage optimization tools, Messages in iCloud syncing, and manual attachment management to prevent Animoji videos from consuming excessive local space.
Messages App Storage and Attachments
When you record and send an Animoji in iOS 12, the recording is
rendered as a standard QuickTime .mov or .mp4
video file with accompanying audio. By default, this video lives
directly inside the Messages app attachment cache:
- Internal Cache: The clip remains part of the conversation thread, stored locally inside the system’s Messages data partition.
- Auto-Deletion Rules: If you have set message history to expire (Settings > Messages > Keep Messages set to 30 Days or 1 Year), any Animoji video sent or received within those threads will automatically be deleted once the timeframe lapses.
Saving to the Photos App
If you tap an Animoji in a message thread and select "Save," the video is copied out of the Messages sandbox and placed into your Photos library (Camera Roll):
- Independent File: Once saved to Photos, the clip exists independently of the Messages conversation. Deleting the original message will not delete the copy in Photos, and vice versa.
- iCloud Photos Optimization: If iCloud Photos is enabled with the Optimize iPhone Storage setting turned on, iOS 12 manages the clip by offloading the full-resolution video to iCloud when local storage runs low, keeping only a low-resolution thumbnail on the device until you play it again.
Messages in iCloud Integration
Introduced shortly before iOS 12 and refined within it, the Messages in iCloud feature fundamentally changes how Animoji attachments are stored:
- When enabled (Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Messages), all sent and received Animoji videos upload to your iCloud storage.
- iOS 12 automatically offloads older or infrequently accessed video attachments from local flash storage, redownloading the Animoji on demand when you scroll back to that point in the conversation.
Manual Storage Management in iOS 12
iOS 12 includes dedicated storage management tools to help users locate and remove space-consuming Animoji clips without deleting entire conversations:
- Open Settings and navigate to General > iPhone Storage.
- Select Messages.
- Tap Videos or Review Large Attachments.
- iOS 12 displays a list of all stored video files sorted by size, including Animoji clips.
- Swiping left on any Animoji video allows you to delete it directly from your device and message thread to instantly reclaim local capacity.
