How iOS 12 Handles Repeated Calls in Do Not Disturb

In iOS 12, Apple’s Do Not Disturb feature includes a built-in safety net designed to let urgent calls bypass the silent mode. When the "Repeated Calls" setting is enabled, iOS 12 silences the first incoming call from a number, but will allow a second call from that exact same phone number to ring audibly if it occurs within three minutes of the first attempt.

The Three-Minute Rule

The core mechanism behind repeated calls in iOS 12 relies on a strict three-minute window. When Do Not Disturb is active, any incoming call is automatically routed to voicemail or silenced without lighting up the display. However, if that same caller dials again within three minutes, iOS 12 recognizes the persistent attempt as a potential emergency. The system overrides the silence protocol, causing the device to ring, vibrate, and display the incoming call banner normally.

Enabling or Disabling Repeated Calls

This behavior is governed by a toggle switch in the operating system's settings:

  1. Open the Settings app on an iPhone or iPad running iOS 12.
  2. Select Do Not Disturb.
  3. Scroll down to the Phone section to locate the Repeated Calls toggle.

When the switch is toggled on (green), the three-minute rule is active. When toggled off, all calls from standard contacts or unknown numbers will be silenced indefinitely during Do Not Disturb hours, regardless of how many times they call in succession.

Interaction with Allowed Contacts

The Repeated Calls feature works in tandem with the "Allow Calls From" setting. In iOS 12, users can configure Do Not Disturb to always permit calls from "Everyone," "No One," "Favorites," or specific contact groups.

If a caller is already listed in your approved group (such as Favorites), their calls will ring on the very first attempt. The Repeated Calls function specifically serves as a bypass for everyone else—including unsaved numbers, acquaintances, or contacts not designated as favorites—ensuring that genuine emergencies can still get through without completely disabling the benefits of Do Not Disturb.
