How iOS 12 Groups Notifications on Lock Screen

With the release of iOS 12, Apple introduced grouped notifications to solve the issue of a cluttered lock screen by automatically bundling alerts together based on app, topic, or message thread. Instead of displaying a long, disorganized chronological list of every individual alert, iOS 12 stacks related notifications into neat, layered piles. This article explains how this grouping mechanism functions, how to interact with the stacks on your lock screen, and how to customize the grouping behavior in your device settings.

The Stacking Mechanism

When multiple alerts arrive from the same application, iOS 12 creates a visual "stack" that resembles a layered deck of cards on your lock screen. The most recent notification sits at the top of the pile, showing its full preview and timestamp, while the edges of older notifications peek out from behind it. A small indicator in the bottom corner of the top card shows how many additional alerts are contained within the stack.

Interacting with Notification Stacks

Managing grouped notifications on the lock screen requires only a few basic gestures:

  • Expanding a Stack: Tap anywhere on the notification stack. The stack will expand down the screen, revealing every individual notification in chronological order.
  • Collapsing a Stack: Once expanded, tap the "Show Less" button at the top right of the group to return the alerts to their compact stacked format.
  • Clearing Alerts: Tapping the "X" icon next to an individual alert removes just that notification. Tapping the "X" on a collapsed stack or at the top of an expanded group lets you select "Clear All," instantly removing every notification from that group.
  • Quick Management: Swiping left on an entire stack reveals options like "Manage," "View," and "Clear All." Tapping "Manage" gives you immediate access to mute future alerts or adjust their delivery settings without unlocking the device.

Grouping Options: Automatic vs. By App

iOS 12 provides distinct methods for how it organizes alerts, which can be configured per application:

  1. Automatic (Default): The operating system uses internal app intelligence to create smart groups. For example, the Messages app might generate separate stacks for different conversation threads, or the Mail app might group emails by sender or mailbox.
  2. By App: This setting forces every single notification from a specific application into a single, unified stack, regardless of the sender, subject, or thread.
  3. Off: Disables grouping entirely for that application, restoring the older iOS behavior where each notification appears individually in chronological order.

How to Adjust Grouping Settings

To change how a specific app groups notifications on your lock screen:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Scroll down and select the specific app you want to configure.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap Notification Grouping.
  5. Select Automatic, By App, or Off based on your preference.
