How iOS 12 Changed the iPad Status Bar Layout

With the release of iOS 12, Apple overhauled the iPad status bar interface to mirror the design language introduced on the iPhone X. This redesign reorganized system icons, vacated the central display area, and aligned the tablet's navigation gestures with modern full-screen Apple devices.

Relocation of the Clock and Date

Prior to iOS 12, the time was prominently positioned in the absolute center of the iPad status bar. In the update, Apple relocated the current time—and the date—to the far upper-left corner. This directly mirrored the left "ear" placement established on the iPhone X, establishing visual consistency across both product lines.

Consolidated Connectivity and Battery Icons

All critical status indicators were consolidated into the far upper-right corner. This group included:

  • Cellular signal strength bars
  • Wi-Fi connection indicator
  • Location services and Bluetooth icons
  • Battery icon and numerical percentage

By grouping these indicators on the right, the layout mirrored the right "ear" of the iPhone X display.

Creation of an Empty Center Gap

By moving all information to the outer edges, Apple left the center of the iPad status bar completely empty. While iPads did not feature a physical display notch, this empty space harmonized the visual layout between notched iPhones and notch-less iPads. The empty center also laid the groundwork for the edge-to-edge iPad Pro models introduced later that year, which featured slim, symmetrical bezels and Face ID camera hardware.

Associated Control Center Gesture

Alongside the visual status bar changes, Apple modified how users access the Control Center. Previously summoned by swiping up from the bottom of the screen, the action in iOS 12 was remapped to a swipe down from the upper-right corner of the status bar—the exact location housing the newly grouped battery and connectivity icons, mirroring the iPhone X interaction.
