How iOS 12 Bedtime Mode Hides Notifications

Apple’s iOS 12 introduced Bedtime mode as an enhancement to Do Not Disturb, specifically engineered to prevent nighttime distractions and reduce screen-checking anxiety. This article explains how Bedtime mode suppresses incoming alerts, modifies the Lock screen behavior overnight, and securely holds notifications in the background until you wake up.

The Problem with Standard Do Not Disturb

Under standard Do Not Disturb, iOS silences incoming calls, messages, and app alerts, preventing the phone from vibrating or lighting up. However, if you wake up in the middle of the night and tap your screen to check the time, standard Do Not Disturb still displays every accumulated alert on the Lock screen. This often leads to sleep disruption as users inadvertently read urgent emails or messages.

The Bedtime Mode Mechanism

Bedtime mode alters how the operating system routes incoming push notifications between your set bedtime and wake-up time:

  1. Lock Screen Bypassing: When Bedtime mode is active, incoming notifications do not post to the active Lock screen. Instead, the system automatically redirects them straight to the Notification Center history.
  2. Display Dimming: The Lock screen is darkened significantly, displaying only the digital clock and a small indicator noting that Bedtime mode is active.
  3. Suppressed Screen Wake: New alerts do not illuminate the display or trigger banner previews, ensuring the room remains dark throughout the night.
  4. Audio and Haptic Silencing: Just like standard Do Not Disturb, ringers and vibrations are fully suppressed, with exceptions only granted to emergency bypass contacts or repeated calls if configured.

The Morning Transition

Notifications are not deleted or permanently suppressed; they are merely concealed. When the scheduled Bedtime mode ends in the morning, the lock screen displays a "Good Morning" greeting accompanied by the current weather forecast.

Once you unlock your iPhone with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode, the suppressed alerts reappear in their normal state within the Notification Center, organized by app grouping. This separation ensures that you only confront your alerts after you have officially decided to start your day.
