How iOS 12 Background App Updates Work
In iOS 12, automatic app updates operate via intelligent system daemons that balance device performance, battery health, and network usage. Rather than updating apps immediately upon release, the operating system uses machine learning and contextual triggers to schedule downloads during optimal windows, such as when the device is idle, connected to Wi-Fi, and charging. This ensures that applications stay current without interrupting active usage or depleting the battery.
The Role of System Daemons
The App Store relies on internal iOS daemons—primarily
appstored and nsurlsessiond—to manage updates.
These background processes communicate with Apple’s servers periodically
through silent push notifications and scheduled check-ins. When a
developer releases a new build, Apple queues the update for devices, but
the local daemon decides the precise execution moment based on real-time
device telemetry.
Intelligent Scheduling and Usage Patterns
iOS 12 incorporates behavioral prediction to schedule background tasks. The operating system monitors daily usage habits to establish an operational routine.
- Idle Windows: Updates are prioritized during typical periods of inactivity, most commonly overnight.
- App Frequency: Apps used frequently receive priority scheduling over rarely opened applications, ensuring critical software is ready when needed.
Resource and Network Constraints
To prevent performance degradation, iOS 12 enforces strict conditions before initiating an automatic update:
- Network Status: By default, automatic downloads only run over Wi-Fi to preserve cellular data allowances. If "Use Cellular Data" is manually toggled on in iTunes & App Store settings, small updates may download over cellular networks.
- Power and Battery: Automatic updates are deferred if the battery level is low. The system heavily favors states where the iPhone or iPad is plugged into power. If Low Power Mode is activated, all automatic background downloads and updates are paused immediately.
- Thermal Conditions: If the device experiences high internal temperatures from heavy processing or fast charging, background tasks are throttled until the device cools down.
Difference Between App Updates and Background Refresh
Automatic app updates specifically replace the application’s binary via the App Store. This is distinct from Background App Refresh, which allows already installed apps to wake briefly in the background to fetch new content (such as new emails or social feeds). While an app update modifies the software version, Background App Refresh simply ensures the app's internal data is ready before the user launches it.
