FaceTime Links for Non-Apple Users in iOS 12

This article explains the compatibility and limitations of using FaceTime links to call non-Apple users from devices running iOS 12. In short, iOS 12 does not support generating or sharing FaceTime links for Android or Windows users. The capability to invite non-Apple users to FaceTime via a web link was introduced in iOS 15, meaning devices restricted to iOS 12 cannot natively communicate with non-Apple platforms through FaceTime.

iOS 12 Limitations

Apple introduced FaceTime links alongside iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey. In iOS 12, FaceTime only functions as a closed, end-to-end encrypted protocol exclusive to Apple hardware running the FaceTime application. There is no built-in mechanism to generate an HTTP web link, nor is there web browser support for non-Apple platforms to join an iOS 12 call.

Requirements for Web-Based FaceTime Calls

To create a shareable link that allows Windows or Android users to join a FaceTime call, you must meet the following software requirements:

  • Host Device: An Apple device running at least iOS 15, iPadOS 15, or macOS Monterey.
  • Participant Device: An Android or Windows device equipped with an up-to-date web browser (such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge) with hardware audio/video support.

Because older devices such as the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and original iPad Air cannot update beyond iOS 12.5.7, they permanently lack support for creating or joining link-based FaceTime meetings.

Cross-Platform Alternatives for iOS 12

If you are using a device running iOS 12 and need to initiate a video call with someone on Android or Windows, you must use cross-platform third-party applications compatible with iOS 12:

  • Zoom: Available on iOS 12 and works across Windows, Android, macOS, and Linux.
  • Skype: Supports video calls between iOS and non-Apple platforms.
  • Google Meet: Accessible via the mobile app or supported mobile browsers.
  • WhatsApp: Allows cross-platform calling, provided the iOS 12 version of the app remains supported by Meta.
