Does iOS 12 Screen Time Sync Across iCloud Devices?

Apple's iOS 12 operating system allows Screen Time to sync usage data across all devices connected to the same iCloud account. By enabling a single built-in setting, users can aggregate their total device activity across multiple iPhones and iPads, or view reports for individual devices. This article explains how the synchronization works, how to turn it on, and how it integrates with Family Sharing.

How Screen Time Syncing Works

When enabled, Screen Time combines data from every compatible device running iOS 12 or later that is signed in with the same Apple ID. It calculates total screen usage, app category breakdowns, notification counts, and device pick-ups across all your hardware into a unified report.

App Limits also sync across your devices. If you set a one-hour daily limit for Social Networking, that limit applies collectively across your iPhone and iPad rather than resetting on each device.

How to Enable Cross-Device Syncing

To sync Screen Time data across your devices, follow these steps on each device:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Screen Time.
  3. If Screen Time is not already on, tap Turn On Screen Time and select This is My [Device].
  4. Scroll down below the main graph and toggle the switch for Share Across Devices to the on (green) position.

Both devices must be connected to the internet and signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID for the data to merge.

Viewing Combined vs. Individual Device Data

By default, the main Screen Time dashboard shows the aggregated activity for all linked devices. If you want to see data for only a specific device:

  1. Go to Settings > Screen Time.
  2. Tap the main usage graph or tap All Devices in the top right corner.
  3. Tap Devices in the upper right.
  4. Select the specific device you want to inspect, or select All Devices to return to the combined view.

Screen Time and Family Sharing

Screen Time synchronization extends to Apple's Family Sharing feature. Parents can view their children’s Screen Time activity remotely from their own devices, provided the family members are linked under the same Family Sharing group.

To manage a child's device remotely:

  1. Open Settings > Screen Time on the parent's device.
  2. Scroll to the Family section at the bottom.
  3. Select the child's name to view their usage reports, set Downtime, and configure App Limits without needing physical access to the child's device.
