Customize iOS 12 Notification Swipe Actions

In iOS 12, Apple introduced significant improvements to the notification system, most notably notification grouping and instant tuning. However, you cannot customize the default swipe actions for individual notifications. While the operating system provides fixed swipe gestures to manage, view, or dismiss alerts, Apple does not allow users to remap or change these gesture commands.

Native Swipe Actions in iOS 12

When interacting with a notification on the Lock screen or in Notification Center on iOS 12, the swipe gestures perform standardized actions:

  • Swipe Right: Tapping or fully swiping right opens the corresponding application.
  • Swipe Left (Partial): Reveals three options: Manage, View, and Clear.
  • Swipe Left (Full): Clears the notification immediately.

These actions are hardcoded into iOS 12 to maintain system-wide consistency, meaning there are no settings available to swap, reorder, or alter these gestures.

What the "Manage" Feature Offers

Instead of customizable gestures, iOS 12 introduced the Manage shortcut within the left-swipe menu to provide quick access to notification settings without opening the Settings app. Tapping Manage presents two primary options:

  • Deliver Quietly: Sends future notifications from that app directly to Notification Center without making a sound, showing an alert banner, or appearing on the Lock screen.
  • Turn Off…: Disables all future notifications from that specific application entirely.

Interactive Notifications vs. Customization

Although users cannot change the swipe gestures, app developers can program context-specific actions into their notifications. By performing a 3D Touch (on supported hardware) or a long-press on a notification, or by selecting the View button, you may see custom actions provided by the app—such as "Reply," "Archive," or "Mark as Read." These options are defined exclusively by the app developer and cannot be modified by the user.
