Block Explicit Books and Music in iOS 12 Screen Time
Apple's iOS 12 introduced Screen Time, a built-in tool that allows users and parents to manage device usage and filter mature content directly from the device. This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to use Screen Time to restrict explicit music, podcasts, and books on an iPhone or iPad, ensuring a safe and family-friendly media experience.
Step 1: Open Screen Time Settings
- Open the Settings app on the iOS 12 device.
- Scroll down and tap Screen Time.
- If Screen Time is not already set up, tap Turn On Screen Time, tap Continue, and choose whether it is your device or a child's device.
Step 2: Access Content & Privacy Restrictions
- Inside the Screen Time menu, tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- If prompted, enter your Screen Time passcode.
- Toggle the switch at the top next to Content & Privacy Restrictions to the On (green) position.
- Tap Content Restrictions.
Step 3: Restrict Explicit Music, Podcasts, and News

Step 4: Restrict Explicit Books
- Return to the Content Restrictions menu by tapping the back arrow.
- Tap Books.
- Select Clean. This setting hides and prevents purchases or downloads of books containing sexually explicit or mature themes in the Apple Books app.
Step 5: Secure Your Settings
To prevent unauthorized changes to these restrictions, ensure you set a dedicated PIN:
- Return to the main Screen Time menu.
- Tap Use Screen Time Passcode (or Change Screen Time Passcode).
- Enter a four-digit code that is different from the device's main lock screen passcode.
