Apply Camera Effects in iOS 12 Messages
Apple's iOS 12 introduced a feature-rich camera directly inside the Messages app, allowing users to transform photos and videos with real-time effects before sending them. This guide explains how to access the integrated camera tools and apply live filters, animated text, shapes, and stickers to your media seamlessly.
How to Access the Messages Camera Effects
- Open the Messages app on your iPhone or iPad running iOS 12.
- Open an existing conversation or start a new thread.
- Tap the Camera icon located to the left of the text input field.
- Tap the star-shaped Effects icon in the lower-left corner of the camera interface. This reveals the real-time effects toolbar above the shutter button.
Adding Real-Time Filters
- Open the effects toolbar and tap the Filters button (represented by three overlapping circles).
- Swipe left or right through the available options, such as Comic Book, Watercolor, Ink, Noir, and Vivid.
- Tap a filter to apply it live to your camera preview. The selected effect will stay active while you frame your shot.
Adding Text and Speech Bubbles
- In the effects toolbar, tap the Text button (represented by the letters Aa).
- Browse through the available font styles and graphic labels.
- Tap the style you prefer, and it will appear on your screen.
- Tap the label to type your custom message using the onscreen keyboard.
- Tap and hold the text element to drag it anywhere within the frame. You can also pinch with two fingers to resize or rotate it before capturing the shot.
Adding Shapes and Stickers
- Tap the Shapes button (represented by a squiggly line and a circle) in the toolbar.
- Select an arrow, scribble, or shape to place it on the screen.
- Reposition, scale, or rotate the shape just as you would with text elements.
- If you have third-party iMessage sticker packs or Memoji/Animoji enabled (on supported devices like iPhone X and later), tap their respective icons in the toolbar to overlay interactive elements directly into the live frame.
Capturing and Sending Your Media
- With all your chosen effects active in the viewfinder, tap the round Shutter button to take a photo, or press and hold it to record a video.
- Review your captured media. You can add further edits or tap the X in the top-right corner to discard and try again.
- Tap the blue Done button in the lower-right corner to insert the photo or video into the message composition box.
- Tap the green or blue Send arrow to deliver your customized media to the recipient.
