Apple News Redesign in iOS 12

Apple introduced a major visual and organizational overhaul to the Apple News app in iOS 12, focusing on streamlined navigation, improved discovery, and a cleaner reading interface. The update redesigned the core layout across both iPhone and iPad, replacing the previous browsing structure with dedicated tabs, an expanded iPad sidebar, and bolder visual hierarchies that made tracking favorite channels and discovering new topics much faster.

New Navigation Tabs and the "Following" Tab

The most noticeable change on the iPhone was the restructured bottom navigation bar. Apple simplified the interface into distinct tabs: Today, Following, and Search. The newly introduced Following tab served as a centralized hub where users could easily view, manage, and jump directly to specific channels, topics, and saved stories. This replaced the cluttered navigation flows of iOS 11, giving readers immediate access to their personalized subscriptions and favorite publications.

Dedicated iPad Sidebar

On the iPad, Apple took advantage of the larger display by introducing an integrated sidebar. Instead of relying solely on bottom tabs, iPad users could open a persistent left-hand navigation panel. This sidebar allowed readers to quickly scroll through Top Stories, curated sections, and their complete list of followed channels and topics without leaving the main reading pane.

Refined Typography and Feed Layouts

The visual presentation of news feeds received a modernized design language characterized by:

  • Bolder Headlines and Clearer Sectioning: Visual dividers and high-contrast titles made it easier to distinguish between editor-curated "Top Stories," algorithmic recommendations, and channel-specific updates.
  • Streamlined Article Previews: Article cards were redesigned with cleaner margins, sharper thumbnail previews, and consistent publisher branding badges.
  • Improved Channel Identity: Publication logos and channel branding were made more prominent at the top of feeds, giving readers immediate visual recognition of their news sources.

Enhanced Discovery and Browse Features

Browsing for new topics and publications was directly integrated into the search and following interfaces. Visual category cards with rich colors and distinct icons were added to guide users to popular categories such as politics, sports, entertainment, and technology, making the app feel more organized and visually accessible.
