Supported PDF Standards for Export in CorelDRAW

CorelDRAW provides a robust set of PDF export options designed to accommodate workflows ranging from general office distribution and web viewing to high-end commercial prepress and long-term document archiving. When publishing to PDF, users can select from standard Adobe Acrobat-compatible formats as well as ISO-compliant sub-standards including PDF/X and PDF/A. Understanding the differences among these standards ensures color accuracy, font preservation, and structural integrity for the end user or print service provider.

Standard PDF Versions (Acrobat Compatibility)

CorelDRAW allows users to export standard PDF files tailored to specific versions of Adobe Acrobat, which dictate feature support such as live transparency, layer handling, and file compression:

  • PDF 1.3 (Acrobat 4.0): Flattens all transparency effects into vector and raster objects. It is the most backward-compatible standard for legacy RIPs and older workflows.
  • PDF 1.4 (Acrobat 5.0): Introduces native support for live transparency and 128-bit encryption, eliminating the need to rasterize complex overlapping shapes during export.
  • PDF 1.5 (Acrobat 6.0): Adds support for object layers, JPEG 2000 image compression, and embedded multimedia.
  • PDF 1.6 (Acrobat 7.0): Supports embedded OpenType fonts, 3D data, and improved color handling with advanced encryption.
  • PDF 1.7 (Acrobat 8.0, 9.0, and newer): The universal ISO 32000-1 standard, providing modern rendering capabilities, enhanced security, and full support for interactive elements.

PDF/X Standards (Commercial Prepress and Printing)

PDF/X (Portable Document Format Exchange) standards are designed specifically for the graphic arts and professional printing industries to eliminate unexpected prepress errors:

  • PDF/X-1a: Designed for blind-exchange CMYK workflows. It strictly forbids native transparency, RGB content, and embedded multimedia. All colors must be CMYK or spot colors, and all fonts must be embedded.
  • PDF/X-3: Broadens PDF/X-1a by allowing device-independent color spaces (such as RGB and Lab) alongside CMYK, relying on ICC profiles for color conversions at the print production stage. Transparency is still flattened.
  • PDF/X-4: A modern standard that supports native, live transparency and PDF layers alongside color-managed RGB and CMYK data. This avoids rasterization artifacts caused by transparency flattening.

PDF/A Standards (Electronic Document Archiving)

PDF/A standards are ISO-regulated profiles optimized for long-term document preservation, ensuring files remain readable and identical across future software systems:

  • PDF/A-1b: Guarantees that the visual appearance of the document is preserved over time. It requires all fonts and color profiles to be fully embedded and disallows features that rely on external resources, such as hyperlinks, audio, and JavaScript.
  • PDF/A-1a: Incorporates all PDF/A-1b visual requirements while additionally requiring structural document tags to ensure accessibility and content reusability for assistive technologies.

PDF/E (Engineering Workflows)

Supported primarily in CorelDRAW Technical Suite editions, PDF/E is tailored for technical documentation, architectural drawings, and engineering workflows, enabling precise vector scaling and markup capabilities.

Selecting PDF Standards in CorelDRAW

To access these standards in CorelDRAW:

  1. Go to File > Publish to PDF.
  2. Open the PDF Preset dropdown to select predefined configurations such as PDF/X-1a, PDF/X-3, PDF/X-4, or PDF/A-1b.
  3. Click Settings to access the advanced dialog box where individual compatibility levels, color management models (CMYK, RGB, or Grayscale), compression settings, and preflight verification rules can be manually fine-tuned.
