Simulate Coated vs Uncoated Paper in CorelDRAW

Soft proofing in CorelDRAW allows designers to preview on-screen how ink and paper absorbency affect printed artwork before sending jobs to press. Simulating coated versus uncoated stocks requires configuring the Color Proof Settings docker with the correct ICC color profiles, rendering intents, and paper simulation options. This guide outlines the exact settings needed to accurately reproduce the contrast, saturation, and dynamic range of both paper types.

How to Access Soft Proof Settings

  1. Open your document in CorelDRAW.
  2. Go to Window > Dockers > Color Proof Settings (or click the soft proof icon on the status bar).
  3. Check the Proof colors box to activate the on-screen simulation.

Settings for Coated Paper

Coated papers (gloss, satin, or matte) have a surface sealant that prevents ink from absorbing deeply into the fibers. This produces sharp dot definition, high contrast, vibrant colors, and deep blacks.

  • Color Profile (North America): Select GRACoL2006_Coated1v2, GRACoL 2013, or U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2.
  • Color Profile (Europe/ISO): Select FOGRA39 or FOGRA51 (PSO Coated v3).
  • Rendering Intent: Set to Relative Colorimetric. This preserves in-gamut colors and maps out-of-gamut shades to the closest printable equivalent while maintaining bright white highlights.
  • Simulate Paper Color: Leave unchecked for standard monitor previews, or check it only if calibrating against an off-white coated sheet.

Settings for Uncoated Paper

Uncoated stocks (such as offset paper, letterhead, or vellum) absorb ink heavily into the raw paper fibers. This results in dot gain, muted contrast, reduced color saturation, and lifted, charcoal-toned blacks.

  • Color Profile (North America): Select U.S. Sheetfed Uncoated v2 or GRACoL Uncoated.
  • Color Profile (Europe/ISO): Select FOGRA47 or FOGRA52 (PSO Uncoated v3).
  • Rendering Intent: Set to Relative Colorimetric for general design work, or switch to Absolute Colorimetric to evaluate how the natural, non-brightened paper base shifts image tones.
  • Simulate Paper Color: Check the Paper color (or Simulate Paper) box. This dims monitor brightness in the white areas, accurately showing the duller paper tone and the reduced maximum density (\(D_{max}\)) of black ink on raw fibers.

Critical Considerations for Accurate Proofing

  • Out-of-Gamut Warning: In the Color Proof Settings docker, enable Out-of-gamut colors to display a warning highlight over vibrant RGB or spot colors that will dramatically shift when printed on uncoated paper.
  • Display Calibration: Soft proofing relies on monitor accuracy. Ensure your monitor is calibrated using a hardware spectrophotometer to a D50 or D65 white point, as uncalibrated displays cannot accurately show the muted gamut of uncoated paper profiles.
