Refine Trace Results with CorelDRAW PowerTRACE
CorelDRAW's PowerTRACE converts bitmap images into clean, editable vector graphics, but initial automated traces often require fine-tuning to achieve optimal results. This guide provides a straightforward method for refining your trace results using PowerTRACE's built-in adjustments, focusing on detail control, smoothing parameters, color management, and post-trace node cleanup.
Choose the Right Trace Preset
Begin by selecting your bitmap and navigating to Trace Bitmap > Outline Trace on the Property Bar. Choose the preset that best matches your source material:
- Line Art: Ideal for black-and-white sketches and diagrams.
- Logo or Clip Art: Best for graphics with simple shapes and flat colors.
- Detailed Logo or High Quality Artwork: Suited for complex images with fine details and subtle gradations.
Adjust the Settings Sliders
Once the PowerTRACE preview window opens, switch to the Settings tab to refine the geometric accuracy of the trace:
- Detail: Slide to the right to capture smaller elements and intricate shapes. Slide to the left to ignore noise, compression artifacts, and minor imperfections.
- Smoothing: Increases the curvature of outlines. Raising this value rounds rough, pixelated edges into smooth curves.
- Corner Smoothness: Governs how sharp angles are rendered. Lower values retain crisp, pointed corners, while higher values soften them into rounded joints.
Manage and Reduce Colors
Extraneous colors often create unnecessary vector shapes. Switch to the Colors tab to clean up the palette:
- Reduce Color Count: Decrease the Number of colors value to merge visually similar shades and reduce path complexity.
- Merge Colors Manually: Hold
Shiftto select multiple colors from the palette list, right-click, and select Merge to consolidate them into a single color. - Edit Color Values: Select a color and click the Edit icon to map specific areas to exact corporate or design-specific color swatches.
Configure Output Options
Return to the Settings tab and expand the options section to automate the cleanup:
- Delete original image: Check this box if you no longer need the raster layer beneath your trace.
- Remove background: Choose Automatically or select Specify color to pick the background color with the Eyedropper tool, eliminating the need to manually delete the background shape later.
- Merge adjacent objects of the same color: Merges touching paths that share a color, eliminating visible seams.
- Group objects by color: Organizes the resulting vector shapes into logical groups for faster editing.
Final Polish with the Shape Tool
Click OK to apply the trace to your CorelDRAW document. Complete the refinement directly on the canvas:
- Ungroup the vector object (
Ctrl + U). - Select the Shape Tool (
F10). - Select overlapping or jagged paths and use the Reduce Nodes slider on the Property Bar to simplify paths without losing the overall silhouette.
- Manually delete redundant nodes to ensure smooth lines for cutting, printing, or screen display.
