Motion Blur Effects in CorelDRAW

CorelDRAW offers a dedicated suite of blur tools designed to simulate dynamic movement, speed, and depth within both vector illustrations and imported bitmaps. This article outlines the specific motion-related blur effects supported in CorelDRAW—primarily standard Motion Blur, Radial Blur, and Zoom Blur—and explains how each effect operates to help you achieve realistic visual motion in your designs.

Supported Motion Blur Tools

To apply blur effects in CorelDRAW, objects must either be bitmaps or converted into non-destructive bitmap effects. The software provides three primary effects to simulate movement, located under the Effects > Blur menu:

1. Motion Blur

The standard Motion Blur filter creates the illusion of linear movement across a flat plane, mimicking a photograph taken of a fast-moving object or taken with a panning camera.

  • Angle: Determines the directional line of the movement (from 0 to 360 degrees).
  • Distance: Controls the intensity and length of the blur trail, representing the speed of the motion.
  • Best Used For: Vehicles driving by, running characters, falling objects, or any subject traveling in a straight path.

2. Radial Blur

The Radial Blur filter simulates circular or rotational motion around an adjustable focal point. Instead of blurring in a straight line, pixels smear along concentric circular paths.

  • Center Point: Allows you to place the axis of rotation anywhere on the object.
  • Amount: Adjusts the degree of the circular sweep, creating subtle or extreme spinning effects.
  • Best Used For: Spinning car tires, rotating gears, propellers, whirlpools, or simulating camera dizziness.

3. Zoom Blur

The Zoom Blur filter generates movement that rushes either toward or away from the viewer. The blur streaks outward along radial lines from a designated center, emulating a rapid camera lens zoom or high-speed forward travel.

  • Focal Point: Sets the origin point from which the visual streaks radiate.
  • Intensity: Controls how far the blur expands outward from the center.
  • Best Used For: Space warp effects, high-speed tunnel sequences, dramatic focus shifts, and explosive visual accents.
  • Directional Smooth: While not classified strictly as high-speed motion, this tool softens image edges along a specified angle. It provides a gentler, more subdued directional smear compared to the standard Motion Blur.

Applying Motion Blurs in CorelDRAW

  1. Select your target object or group.
  2. Navigate to Effects > Blur from the top menu bar.
  3. Choose Motion Blur, Radial Blur, or Zoom Blur.
  4. Adjust the sliders in the dialog box while using the Preview toggle to monitor real-time changes.
  5. Click OK to apply the effect.

When applied to vector objects, CorelDRAW treats these blurs as non-destructive bitmap effects. You can edit, hide, or remove the effect at any time through the Properties or Effects docker without permanently altering the underlying vector geometry.
