Locked Guidelines Options in CorelDRAW
CorelDRAW provides several options to lock guidelines, preventing accidental shifts or deletions while you work on complex vector layouts. These controls allow you to secure individual guide rules directly on the canvas, manage them en masse through the dedicated Guidelines docker, or restrict entire guideline layers across single or multiple pages using the Objects docker.
Context Menu Locking
The most direct way to secure a guideline is through the on-screen context menu:
- Lock an Individual Guideline: Click to select a guideline, right-click on it, and select Lock. Once locked, the guideline cannot be moved, selected with standard clicks, or deleted until unlocked.
- Unlock an Individual Guideline: Right-click the locked guideline and select Unlock.
- Batch Locking via Selection: Hold Shift while clicking multiple guidelines, or drag a marquee around them with the Pick tool, then right-click and choose Lock to lock all selected guides simultaneously.
The Objects Docker (Object Manager)
The Objects docker (labeled Object Manager in older CorelDRAW versions) offers layer-level control over guidelines.
- Lock the Entire Guidelines Layer: In the Objects docker, locate the Guides layer. Click the Lock icon (padlock) next to the layer name. This immediately locks every guideline on the active page, protecting them without needing to select each one individually.
- Lock Specific Guides in the Tree: Expand the Guides layer to view each individual guideline object. Click the padlock icon next to any specific guideline entry to lock or unlock it independently.
Master Page Guideline Controls
For multi-page projects, CorelDRAW separates page-specific guidelines from document-wide guidelines.
- Master Guides Layer: In the Objects docker, under the Master Page section, there is a dedicated Guides (all pages) layer.
- Locking Master Guidelines: Toggling the lock icon on the Master Page Guides layer prevents changes to layout guides that appear across every page of your document, ensuring consistent margins and grids throughout the project.
The Guidelines Docker (Inspector)
The Guidelines docker provides numeric precision and list-based management for your layout guides.
- Manage by Coordinate: Open the docker via Window > Dockers > Guidelines. This panel lists all horizontal, vertical, and angled guidelines by their exact coordinates.
- Locking from the List: Select any guideline from the list and use the lock toggle within the docker settings to secure it against changes. This method is useful when you need to confirm precise measurements before locking the guides in place.
