Large Scale Print Tiling Options in CorelDRAW

Printing large-scale graphics on standard-sized media requires breaking down a single design into multiple manageable sheets, a process known as tiling. CorelDRAW provides built-in tiling capabilities within its print engine, allowing users to divide oversized banners, posters, and technical drawings across several pages. This guide outlines the essential tiling options available in CorelDRAW, including automatic grid generation, overlap adjustments, and alignment marks to ensure seamless assembly.

Accessing the Tiling Feature

To access tiling settings in CorelDRAW, navigate to File > Print and select the Layout tab. Alternatively, you can open the Print Preview window, which offers a visual, interactive representation of how your artwork will be divided across the selected paper size.

The primary control is the Print tiled pages checkbox. When enabled, CorelDRAW automatically calculates the total number of pages required to print the entire graphic based on the active printer's current paper size and orientation. If your graphic is 24x36 inches and your printer handles standard 8.5x11-inch sheets, CorelDRAW automatically generates an appropriate multi-page grid.

Tile Overlap Settings

Assembling segmented prints requires an overlapping margin to ensure no artwork is lost during trimming and joining:

  • Overlap Value: Found in the Layout tab, this setting lets you define a specific measurement (such as 0.5 inches or 15 mm) that repeats along the adjoining edges of each tile.
  • Assembly Aid: This repeated section ensures that minor alignment errors during manual cutting and pasting do not result in visible gaps or misalignments in the final graphic.

Alignment Marks and Numbering

To assemble complex, multi-page prints correctly, CorelDRAW includes navigational aids:

  • Tiling Marks: Enabling tiling marks prints registration guides along the borders of each tile, indicating precisely where adjacent panels should overlap or be trimmed.
  • Page Numbers and Identifiers: CorelDRAW can print tile coordinates (such as Row 1, Column 2) outside the printable artwork area, making it easier to arrange large grids with dozens of individual sheets.

Interactive Adjustments in Print Preview

The Print Preview mode offers the highest degree of control over tiled output:

  • Manual Tile Placement: You can click and drag tile boundary lines directly on the preview screen to adjust where seams fall, helping avoid cuts through critical details like text or faces.
  • Selective Page Printing: If only a specific section of a large graphic needs to be reprinted, you can deselect unwanted tiles in the preview to print only the required panels, saving ink and paper.
