ISBN Barcode Options in CorelDRAW

CorelDRAW includes a dedicated Barcode Wizard that allows publishers and designers to generate industry-compliant ISBN barcodes directly within the application. This guide outlines the specific ISBN options available in CorelDRAW, including formatting standards, supplemental price codes, typographic controls, dimensional scaling, and vector conversion techniques required for professional book printing.

Accessing the Barcode Wizard

In CorelDRAW, the barcode generation tool is accessed by navigating to Object > Insert > Barcode (or Edit > Insert Barcode in older versions). This launches the Corel Barcode Wizard, an integrated utility that handles various industry-standard symbologies, including book publishing formats.

Industry Standard Formats (ISBN and EAN-13)

Modern ISBNs use a 13-digit format fully compatible with the international EAN-13 standard. CorelDRAW provides the following options for entering book identification numbers:

  • EAN-13 / Bookland EAN: The standard format for all modern ISBNs. The wizard accepts 12 data digits (usually beginning with the 978 or 979 prefix) and automatically calculates the mandatory 13th modulo-10 check digit.
  • ISBN Format Selection: Certain CorelDRAW versions list "ISBN" directly in the symbology drop-down, which presets the encoding to the EAN-13 Bookland format.

Supplemental Add-on Codes (Price Codes)

Book retail systems, particularly in North America, often require an additional supplemental barcode alongside the primary ISBN:

  • 5-Digit Add-on (EAN-5): CorelDRAW provides an option to append a 5-digit supplemental code. In publishing, this is standardly used to encode the retail price (for example, starting with a '5' followed by the currency amount, or '90000' for unpriced inventory).
  • 2-Digit Add-on (EAN-2): Supported by the wizard, though rarely used for ISBNs outside of periodic publications.

Text and Font Customization

The Barcode Wizard allows users to configure the human-readable interpretation (HRI) lines:

  • Text Positioning: You can choose to place the numbers below the bars, above the bars, or suppress human-readable text entirely.
  • Font Selection: CorelDRAW lets you select standard system fonts for the human-readable text. OCR-A or OCR-B fonts are standard for retail scanning compliance.
  • Size and Alignment: Font sizing, tracking, and alignment can be adjusted relative to the barcode bars.

Dimensions, Quiet Zones, and Sizing

CorelDRAW allows precise adjustments to comply with GS1 and book publishing size standards:

  • Magnification / Scale: The wizard allows scaling between 80% and 200% of nominal size. For ISBNs, standard nominal size requires bars approximately 1.0 inch (25.4 mm) in height with an overall width around 1.25 inches (31.75 mm).
  • Bar Height: You can independently adjust the height of the bars without altering the width.
  • Quiet Zones (Bearers/Margins): Options to specify blank margins on the left and right of the barcode to ensure scanning integrity.

Printer Resolution and Output Adjustments

  • Target Resolution: CorelDRAW allows setting the output resolution (e.g., 300, 600, or 1200 DPI) to match the target plate-setter or imagesetter, ensuring the bar widths map precisely to printer pixels and prevent scanning read errors.

Converting to Native Vector Artwork

By default, the wizard inserts the barcode as an OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) container. For print production, CorelDRAW offers options to convert the barcode into native vector curves:

  • Cut and Paste Special: Cutting the barcode and using Edit > Paste Special > Picture (Metafile) converts the barcode into grouped vector objects.
  • Ungroup and Edit: Once converted to vectors, you can change bar colors (ensuring 100% K black for the bars), customize the upper "ISBN" text string, and remove or reshape background panels.
