How to Work with Symbols in CorelDRAW
Symbols in CorelDRAW are reusable design objects that allow you to streamline your workflow and significantly reduce file sizes. When you convert an object into a symbol, you can insert multiple instances of it across your document; editing the master symbol automatically updates every instance in real time. This guide explains how to create, insert, edit, and manage symbols using CorelDRAW's built-in symbol management tools.
What Are Symbols and Why Use Them?
A symbol is an object or group of objects stored once in a project's library. Each time you place it into your design, CorelDRAW generates an "instance" that references the master definition. Using symbols is ideal for elements that repeat frequently—such as logos, icons, UI components, or decorative motifs—because changes applied to the master immediately synchronize across all instances, saving time and keeping designs consistent.
How to Create a Symbol
- Select the object, text, or group of objects you want to turn into a symbol.
- Go to the top menu and select Object > Symbol > Create New Symbol (or right-click the selection and choose Symbol > Create New Symbol).
- In the dialog box that appears, enter a descriptive name for the symbol and click OK.
The object on your page is now the first instance of the newly created symbol, indicated by a small marker on its bounding box.
How to Insert Symbol Instances
To add more copies of your symbol into your document:
- Open the Symbols docker by navigating to Window > Dockers > Symbols (or press Ctrl + F11).
- Locate your symbol within the active document's library.
- Drag the symbol directly from the docker onto your drawing canvas.
- Alternatively, select the symbol in the docker and click the Insert Symbol button at the bottom of the panel.
You can move, scale, rotate, and skew individual instances without altering the underlying master symbol.
How to Edit a Master Symbol
Editing the master definition updates every instance in the document:
- Right-click any symbol instance on the page and select Edit Symbol (or select the instance and click Edit Symbol in the Property Bar).
- The interface will switch to symbol editing mode, dimming the rest of your artwork.
- Make your desired modifications to colors, shapes, nodes, or text.
- Once finished, click the Finish Editing Object button in the top property bar or at the bottom-left corner of the drawing window.
All instances across all pages will immediately reflect the changes.
How to Break the Link to a Symbol
If you need to customize an individual instance without changing the others, you must disconnect it from the master:
- Select the specific symbol instance you want to modify independently.
- Right-click it and choose Break Link (or go to Object > Symbol > Break Link).
The instance is converted back into standard CorelDRAW curves, text, or groups, allowing you to edit it without affecting the remaining symbol instances.
Managing and Sharing Symbol Libraries
The Symbols docker lets you organize and export
symbols for use in other projects. You can export a document's symbols
as a Corel Symbol Library (.csl) file by clicking the
docker options menu and choosing Export Library. To use
them in a new file, open the docker, select Import
Library, and browse to your saved .csl file.
