How to Work with Layers in CorelDRAW

Working with layers in CorelDRAW allows you to organize, edit, and control complex vector artwork efficiently across single or multi-page documents. This guide explains how to access the Objects docker, create and manage layers, control object visibility and editability, and utilize master layers for shared design elements across multiple pages.

Accessing the Objects Docker

All layer management in CorelDRAW takes place inside the Objects docker (previously named Object Manager in older versions).

  1. Go to the top menu and select Window.
  2. Hover over Dockers and select Objects.
  3. The Objects docker will appear on the right side of your workspace, displaying your document's pages, layers, and individual objects hierarchically.

Creating and Renaming Layers

CorelDRAW automatically provides a default layer named "Layer 1" on each page, but you can create additional layers to separate different parts of your design.

  • Create a local layer: Click the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Objects docker to add a layer to the active page.
  • Rename a layer: Double-click the layer name, type a descriptive label (such as "Background," "Text," or "Graphics"), and press Enter.

Reordering and Moving Elements

Layer hierarchy determines the stacking order of your artwork, with higher layers appearing in front of lower layers on the canvas.

  • Reorder layers: Click and drag a layer name up or down in the Objects docker list.
  • Move objects between layers: Expand a layer by clicking the arrow next to its name, select an object, and drag it into the target layer.

Managing Layer Properties

Each layer includes three essential control icons located next to its name:

  • Visibility (Eye Icon): Click to toggle the layer on or off. Hiding layers helps reduce visual clutter while working on specific elements.
  • Printing/Exporting (Printer Icon): Click to enable or disable the layer from being printed or exported. This is ideal for design grids, tracing templates, or internal notes.
  • Locking (Pencil/Lock Icon): Click to lock the layer. Locking prevents accidental selection, movement, or modification of elements on that layer.

Using Master Layers

Master layers contain content that appears across all pages of a multi-page document, such as headers, footers, watermarks, or backgrounds.

  1. Open the Objects docker.
  2. Click the New Master Layer icon at the bottom.
  3. Choose whether to place it on the Desktop, on All Pages, on Odd Pages, or on Even Pages.
  4. Add your repeating elements to this layer; any changes made here will automatically update across the designated pages.

Deleting Layers

To remove an unwanted layer, right-click the layer name in the Objects docker and select Delete, or select the layer and click the Trash icon. Note that deleting a layer also permanently deletes all objects contained within it.
