How to Use the Twister Tool in CorelDRAW
This guide provides a straightforward walkthrough on using the Twister distortion tool in CorelDRAW. You will learn where to locate the tool, how to apply dynamic swirl effects to vector objects and text, and how to fine-tune the distortion settings using the property bar to achieve precise graphic results.
Locating the Twister Tool
In CorelDRAW, the Twister effect is a specific mode of the Distort tool.
- Open your document and select or draw the vector object you want to distort.
- Go to the Toolbox on the left side of the workspace.
- Locate the Distort tool (it is often grouped under the Drop Shadow or Effects flyout menu).
- Once the Distort tool is active, look at the Property Bar at the top of the screen and click the Twister Distortion icon (represented by a swirling icon).
Applying the Twist Effect
You can apply the twist either interactively on the canvas or by entering numerical values in the Property Bar.
Method 1: Interactive Dragging
- Click anywhere inside or near your selected object. The point where you click becomes the center of the twist.
- Drag the cursor in a circular motion.
- Dragging clockwise twists the object clockwise, while dragging counterclockwise twists it in the opposite direction.
- Release the mouse button once you achieve the desired shape.
Method 2: Property Bar Controls
For greater precision, use the controls on the Property Bar:
- Rotations: Enter the number of complete 360-degree rotations you want to apply.
- Additional Degrees: Set partial rotations from 0 to 359 degrees.
- Clockwise / Counterclockwise: Click the respective direction buttons to flip the orientation of the twist.
Editing and Refining the Distortion
- Changing the Center Point: When the Distort tool is active on a twisted object, a small center marker appears. Drag this marker to shift the origin of the swirl, which dramatically changes the shape.
- Adding Multiple Distortions: Click the Add New Distortion button on the Property Bar to stack an additional twist, push/pull, or zipper distortion onto the same object.
- Removing the Effect: To revert the object to its original shape, click the Clear Distortion button on the Property Bar.
- Converting to Curves: If you are satisfied with the result and want to edit individual nodes, select the object and press Ctrl + Q (or go to Object > Convert to Curves). Note that this permanently bakes the distortion into the vector path.
