How to Use the Rougher Tool in CorelDRAW
The Rougher tool in CorelDRAW allows designers to add texture, jagged edges, and organic distortions to vector objects and text outlines. This guide provides a straightforward walkthrough on locating the Rougher tool, configuring its core properties like nib size and spike frequency, and applying it directly to your vector paths to create distressed or hand-drawn effects.
Locating the Rougher Tool
The Rougher tool is grouped with the shape-editing tools in the main toolbox:
- Open your project in CorelDRAW and select the vector object you want to modify. If you are working with text, convert it to curves first by pressing Ctrl + Q.
- Click and hold the Shape tool icon (or the flyout arrow next to it) on the left-hand toolbar.
- Select the Rougher tool from the flyout menu.
Configuring the Property Bar Settings
Before applying the effect, adjust the parameters located on the Property Bar at the top of the workspace:
- Size of Nib: Sets the diameter of the brush. A larger nib creates larger, more pronounced distortions, while a smaller nib produces fine, subtle roughness.
- Frequency (Spikes): Controls the number of spikes or indentations generated along the path within the nib area. Higher values result in densely packed jagged edges.
- Dryout: Determines whether the effect fades out along the stroke (useful for tablet styluses). Setting this to 0 keeps the effect consistent.
- Tilt and Bearing: Available when using a pressure-sensitive graphics tablet to control the angle and direction of the distortion.
- Fixed Angle vs. Directional: Choose whether the spikes follow a fixed angle or align dynamically with the direction of your cursor movement.
Applying the Rougher Effect
- Position your cursor over the outline of the selected vector object.
- Click and drag the cursor along the path.
- Observe the edge transforming into jagged spikes as the nib passes over the vector nodes.
- To create a more intense or irregular texture, drag back and forth across the same section multiple times or vary your mouse speed.
- Release the mouse button to finalize the deformation. CorelDRAW automatically generates the new vector nodes along the path.
