How to Use the Callout Tool in CorelDRAW

The Callout tool in CorelDRAW is an essential feature for technical illustrators, designers, and document creators who need to label diagrams, add explanatory notes, or highlight specific areas of a design. This guide provides a straightforward walkthrough on how to locate the Callout tool, draw callouts with precision, format leader lines, and customize text to create clear, professional annotations in your vector projects.

Locating the Callout Tool

The Callout tool is grouped with the dimension and connector tools in the main toolbox:

  1. Look at the toolbox on the left side of your CorelDRAW workspace.
  2. Locate the Dimension tool group (represented by an icon showing a measurement or line).
  3. Click and hold the small arrow in the bottom-right corner of the tool icon to expand the flyout menu.
  4. Select the 3-Point Callout tool from the list.

Drawing a Callout

Creating a callout requires defining the origin point, the angle of the leader line, and the location of the text.

  1. Set the Target Point: Click on the specific object or area on your canvas where you want the callout line to start.
  2. Draw the First Segment: Drag the cursor away from the target point to create the first segment of the leader line.
  3. Set the Elbow Point: Click to place the first bend (elbow) in the leader line.
  4. Draw the Extension Line: Move your mouse to define the horizontal or angled line leading to the text, then click again to finish the line structure.
  5. Enter the Text: A blinking text cursor will automatically appear at the end of the line. Type your annotation or label, then press the Esc key or click away to finalize the text entry.

Customizing the Leader Line and Arrowheads

Once a callout is created, you can modify its visual style using the Property Bar or the Object Properties docker:

  • Outline Width: Select the callout line using the Pick tool, then choose a line thickness from the outline width dropdown on the Property Bar.
  • Arrowhead Styles: Use the start and end marker dropdown menus on the Property Bar to add arrowheads, dots, or slashes to the target end of the leader line.
  • Line Color: Right-click any color swatch in the color palette to change the line color instantly.

Editing and Repositioning Callouts

Callout elements remain dynamic, allowing you to edit the path or the content at any time:

  • Moving Components: Select the Pick tool to move the entire callout as a single unit.
  • Adjusting Nodes: Select the Shape tool (F10) to click and drag the individual nodes (the anchor point, elbow, or text connection point) to adjust the line without moving the text box.
  • Modifying Text: Double-click the text block with the Pick tool to edit the copy, change the font, adjust font size, or apply formatting like bold and italic.
