How to Use Push and Pull Distortion in CorelDRAW
Push and Pull distortion in CorelDRAW is an interactive vector effect that transforms basic shapes by pushing the edges inward or pulling them outward relative to the object's nodes. This article explains how to locate the Distort tool, apply Push and Pull distortion to vector objects and text, and fine-tune amplitude values to create custom graphic assets like stars, flowers, and abstract badges.
Step 1: Select the Object
Select the Pick tool from the toolbox and click on the vector shape, curve, or artistic text you want to distort. Basic shapes like polygons, stars, and rectangles work best for predictable geometric outcomes.
Step 2: Activate the Distort Tool
Locate the Distort tool in the toolbox on the left side of the screen. By default, it is grouped under the flyout menu with the Drop Shadow, Blend, or Extrude tools. Click and hold the flyout group icon, then select Distort from the list.
Step 3: Choose Push and Pull Distortion
Once the Distort tool is active, the Property Bar at the top of the workspace will display distortion options. Click the first icon on the left of the Property Bar: Push and Pull Distortion.
Step 4: Apply the Distortion Interactively
Click directly onto the selected object and drag:
- Drag to the right: This applies a Pull distortion (positive values), expanding the edges outward into rounded, petal-like lobes or inflated curves.
- Drag to the left: This applies a Push distortion (negative values), pulling the nodes inward and sharpening the edges into spike-like or star-like configurations.
A dynamic interactive line and diamond marker appear on the object. The center of this line determines the origin point of the distortion, which you can click and reposition anywhere inside or outside the object.
Step 5: Fine-Tune with the Property Bar
For exact symmetry and precision, use the numeric controls on the Property Bar:
- Push and Pull Amplitude: Enter a specific value between -100 (maximum push) and 100 (maximum pull).
- Center Coordinates: Adjust the X and Y coordinates to shift the origin point of the distortion.
- Preset List: Open the Presets dropdown on the Property Bar to choose pre-configured effects, such as "Push," "Pull," or "Twister."
Step 6: Finalize or Clear the Distortion
- To edit: Reselect the object with the Distort tool at any time to modify the amplitude or center point.
- To remove: Click the Clear Distortion button on the far right of the Property Bar to return the object to its original state.
- To make permanent: Go to Object > Convert to Curves (or press Ctrl + Q). This bakes the distortion into standard editable vector nodes and removes the dynamic distortion properties.
