How to Use Guidelines in CorelDRAW
Guidelines in CorelDRAW are essential non-printable reference lines that help align, size, and position objects accurately on your canvas. This guide provides a direct walkthrough on how to enable, create, adjust, lock, and delete guidelines to streamline your design workflow and maintain precision across your projects.
Enabling Rulers and Guidelines
Before using guidelines, make sure your workspace is set up to display them:
- Go to the top menu and click View.
- Ensure both Rulers and Guidelines are checked. If not, click each option to turn them on.
Adding Guidelines
You can place horizontal, vertical, or angled guidelines anywhere on the drawing page:
- Horizontal Guidelines: Click and hold inside the top horizontal ruler, then drag your cursor down onto the canvas and release.
- Vertical Guidelines: Click and hold inside the left vertical ruler, then drag your cursor to the right onto the canvas and release.
- Angled Guidelines: Click an existing guideline once with the Pick tool to select it, then click it a second time to display rotation handles. Click and drag the rotation handles to tilt the line to your desired angle.
Setting Precise Coordinates and Angles
For exact placement, use the Property Bar at the top of the screen:
- Select the guideline using the Pick tool (it will highlight, typically in red).
- Enter the exact value in the X or Y coordinate box on the Property Bar.
- To set a specific angle, enter the degree value in the Angle of Rotation box.
- Press Enter to apply the changes.
Snapping Objects to Guidelines
To make elements automatically align to your guides:
- Click View in the menu bar.
- Hover over Snap To and select Guidelines.
- When you move an object close to a guideline, it will automatically snap to the edge, center, or node of that line.
Locking Guidelines
To prevent accidental movement while working:
- Right-click the guideline and select Lock.
- To unlock it, right-click the line again and select Unlock.
- Alternatively, open the Guidelines Docker/Inspector (Window > Dockers > Guidelines) to manage, lock, and hide multiple guidelines simultaneously.
Deleting Guidelines
To remove guidelines you no longer need:
- Click the guideline to select it and press the Delete key on your keyboard.
- You can also drag the guideline back into its corresponding ruler to remove it immediately.
- To clear all guidelines at once, open the Guidelines Docker, select all the lines, and click the trash can icon.
