How to Use Color Balance in CorelDRAW

This guide provides a comprehensive overview of using the Color Balance adjustment tool in CorelDRAW to correct color casts and enhance the tonal qualities of your images. You will learn where to locate the tool, how to manipulate specific tonal ranges—shadows, midtones, and highlights—and how to preserve overall image brightness while achieving precise color control across your graphics.

Understanding the Color Balance Tool

The Color Balance adjustment allows you to correct imbalances by shifting colors between complementary color pairs: Cyan-Red, Magenta-Green, and Yellow-Blue. By isolating the adjustment to specific tonal regions of an image, you can warm up highlights, cool down shadows, or neutralize unnatural tints in midtones without altering the entire graphic uniformly.

Step 1: Select Your Object

  1. Open your project in CorelDRAW.
  2. Using the Pick tool, click on the bitmap or imported image you want to adjust.

Step 2: Open the Color Balance Dialog

Depending on the version of CorelDRAW you are using, access the tool using one of the following methods:

  • Go to the top menu and select Effects > Adjust > Color Balance.
  • In older versions, navigate to Bitmaps > Adjust > Color Balance.
  • In modern versions (CorelDRAW 2021 and newer), you can also open the Adjustments docker (Window > Dockers > Adjustments) and add Color Balance as a non-destructive effect.

Step 3: Choose a Tonal Range

Inside the Color Balance settings, select the tonal range you want to target:

  • Shadows: Targets the darkest regions of the image.
  • Midtones: Affects the neutral, medium-brightness areas (recommended for correcting general color casts).
  • Highlights: Targets the brightest areas of the image.

Step 4: Adjust the Sliders

Move the color channel sliders toward the color you want to introduce into the selected tonal range:

  • Cyan / Red: Drag left toward Cyan to cool the image, or right toward Red to warm it.
  • Magenta / Green: Drag left to add Magenta (useful for neutralizing greenish fluorescent lighting), or right to add Green.
  • Yellow / Blue: Drag left to add Yellow, or right to add Blue (useful for correcting warm, indoor incandescent lighting).

Step 5: Preserve Luminance and Finalize

  1. Ensure the Preserve Luminance option is checked. This keeps the brightness values intact so that color shifts do not accidentally darken or blow out the exposure of your image.
  2. Enable the Preview checkbox to inspect your adjustments in real time on the canvas.
  3. Click OK to apply the color correction to your image.
