How to Soft-Proof Colors in CorelDRAW
Soft-proofing in CorelDRAW allows designers to preview on-screen how document colors will appear when reproduced on a specific output device, such as a commercial CMYK printing press. By simulating printer profiles and rendering intents directly within the workspace, you can catch color shifts and out-of-gamut colors before sending a project to production. This guide details how to configure and enable color proofing settings in CorelDRAW to achieve predictable print results.
Step 1: Open the Color Proof Settings Docker
To access the soft-proofing controls, you need to open the dedicated panel:
- Navigate to the top menu bar.
- Click Window > Dockers (or Inspectors in some versions) > Color Proof Settings.
- The Color Proof Settings docker will appear on the right side of your workspace.
Step 2: Choose the Target Color Profile
Inside the Color Proof Settings docker, define the target environment you want to simulate:
- Locate the Simulate environment section.
- Open the Proof profile dropdown menu and select the color profile matching your output device (for example, a standardized press profile like Coated FOGRA39, GRACoL, or a custom profile provided by your commercial printer).
- Choose a Rendering intent. For most graphic design and print layouts, Relative Colorimetric is standard, though Perceptual is recommended if your document contains continuous-tone photographic images.
Step 3: Turn On Soft-Proofing
Once your profile is configured, activate the simulation:
- Check the Proof colors checkbox inside the Color Proof Settings docker.
- Alternatively, you can toggle the view at any time from the top menu by selecting View > Proof Colors.
When activated, CorelDRAW remaps the on-screen display colors to simulate the dynamic range and gamut limitations of the chosen print profile.
Step 4: Identify Out-of-Gamut Colors
To ensure colors do not shift unexpectedly in print, you can highlight colors that exceed the target printer's capabilities:
- In the Color Proof Settings docker, check the Out-of-gamut colors option.
- Choose a highlight color from the color picker (often a bright, contrasting color like fluorescent green or magenta).
- Any color in your design that cannot be accurately reproduced by the selected printer profile will be masked with this highlight color.
- Adjust the fills or outlines of highlighted elements manually until they fall back within the printable gamut.
Essential Tip for Accuracy
For soft-proofing to be reliable, ensure your computer monitor is properly hardware-calibrated and that your document's primary color management settings under Tools > Color Management > Default Settings correctly match your overall production workflow.
