How to Smooth Jagged Vector Lines in CorelDRAW

Jagged vector lines in CorelDRAW typically occur after freehand drawing, converting low-resolution bitmaps using PowerTRACE, or importing distorted CAD files. This guide provides direct, step-by-step methods to smooth out rough vector paths and reduce unnecessary nodes using the dedicated Smooth Tool, the Shape Tool's node-reduction features, and trace optimization settings.

Method 1: Use the Smooth Tool

The Smooth tool allows you to interactively drag along the outline of a vector object to soften sharp angles and remove irregular bumps.

  1. Select the object you want to modify using the Pick Tool.
  2. Open the Shape flyout menu in the toolbox on the left and select the Smooth Tool.
  3. On the property bar at the top, adjust the Nib Size to fit the scale of the curves you are working on.
  4. Set the Rate, which controls the speed and intensity of the smoothing effect as you drag.
  5. Click and drag the nib along the jagged edges of the vector line. The tool will automatically average the path and eliminate redundant nodes in real time.

Method 2: Reduce Nodes with the Shape Tool

Manually reducing the number of nodes simplifies vector geometry, creating naturally smoother curves.

  1. Select the object and press F10 to activate the Shape Tool.
  2. Click and drag a marquee box around the jagged section to select the affected nodes, or press Ctrl + A to select all nodes on the path.
  3. On the property bar, locate the Reduce Nodes button or use the Curve Smoothness slider.
  4. Increase the slider value gradually. CorelDRAW will delete unnecessary control points while maintaining the overall shape of the path.
  5. To fix remaining sharp corners, select individual nodes and click the Smooth Node or Symmetrical Node icon on the property bar to balance the control handles.

Method 3: Adjust Freehand Smoothing Before Drawing

If you are generating jagged lines while using the Freehand or Polyline tools, adjust the application's native stroke stabilization.

  1. Select the Freehand Tool (F5).
  2. Go to the property bar and find the Freehand Smoothing field.
  3. Enter a higher numerical value (up to 100).
  4. Draw your path. CorelDRAW will automatically apply curve-fitting algorithms the moment you release the mouse button to prevent hand tremors from creating jagged edges.

Method 4: Clean Up Lines During Bitmap Tracing

If jagged lines are caused by converting raster artwork into vectors, optimize the settings during the trace phase:

  1. Select the raster image and navigate to Bitmaps > Outline Trace.
  2. Choose a preset (such as Clipart or Detailed Logo).
  3. In the PowerTRACE window, adjust the Smoothing slider to soften hard corners and rounded sections.
  4. Lower the Detail slider slightly to prevent the algorithm from interpreting pixel noise as vector nodes.
  5. Check the preview window and click OK once the lines appear clean and balanced.
