How to Set Custom Outline Width in CorelDRAW

Setting a custom outline width in CorelDRAW allows you to bypass the standard preset thickness options and apply exact stroke dimensions to your vector shapes, lines, and text. This article covers the quickest methods to input custom numerical values using the Outline Pen dialog, the Property Bar, and the Properties docker, as well as how to set a custom width as your document default.

Method 1: Using the Outline Pen Tool (F12)

The Outline Pen dialog provides the most precise control over outline settings, including custom thicknesses and units of measurement.

  1. Select the object or line using the Pick tool.
  2. Press F12 on your keyboard (or double-click the Outline swatch in the bottom-right corner of the Status Bar).
  3. In the Width field, highlight the current number and type your desired custom numerical value (for example, 1.75 or 0.35).
  4. Select your preferred unit of measurement (such as points, millimeters, inches, or pixels) from the drop-down list next to the Width field.
  5. Click OK to apply the stroke.

Method 2: Using the Property Bar

The Property Bar offers the fastest way to change an outline without opening a separate dialog window.

  1. Select your object with the Pick tool.
  2. Locate the Outline Width box on the interactive Property Bar running along the top of the screen.
  3. Click directly inside the numeric input box to highlight the current value.
  4. Type your custom width value and press Enter.

Note: You can type units directly into the box alongside numbers (e.g., typing 3 mm or 12 pt), and CorelDRAW will automatically convert and apply the value.

Method 3: Using the Properties Docker

If you prefer keeping your styling tools open while you work, use the Properties docker.

  1. Open the docker by pressing Alt + Enter or going to Window > Dockers > Properties.
  2. Click the Outline icon (the fountain pen tip) at the top of the docker.
  3. Highlight the value in the Width box, enter your custom number, and press Enter.

Setting a Custom Outline Width as Document Default

To ensure new objects automatically use your custom outline width:

  1. Click an empty area of the workspace so that no objects are selected.
  2. Press F12.
  3. In the prompt that appears, ensure Graphic is checked and click OK.
  4. Enter your custom width value in the Outline Pen dialog and click OK. Any new shape drawn in that document will now use this thickness.
