How to Set Bleed in CorelDRAW
Configuring the correct bleed settings in CorelDRAW is essential to ensure printed projects do not end up with unwanted white borders after trimming. Bleed extends your artwork slightly beyond the final cut line, compensating for minor mechanical misalignments during the printing and cutting processes. This guide details the standard bleed dimensions for print, how to set them within your CorelDRAW document layout, and how to properly include them during PDF export.
Recommended Bleed Measurements
The standard bleed requirement depends on the unit of measurement and product type:
- Standard Commercial Print (Inches): 0.125 inches (1/8") on all sides.
- Standard Commercial Print (Metric): 3.0 mm on all sides.
- Large Format / Signage: 0.25 to 0.5 inches (6 mm to 13 mm), depending on your print provider's specifications.
- Packaging and Book Binding: 0.2 inches (5 mm) or more to accommodate folding and binding creep.
Always verify specific requirements with your commercial printer before finalizing dimensions.
Setting Up Bleed in the Workspace
To configure bleed limits within an active document:
- Go to Layout in the top menu and select Page Setup (or double-click the shadow edge of the page).
- In the Document settings window, navigate to Page Size.
- Locate the Bleed field and enter your required
value (e.g.,
0.125inches or3.0mm). - Check the box labeled Show bleed area to display a dashed guideline outside the page boundary.
- Click OK to apply the changes.
Alternatively, you can toggle the visibility of the bleed boundary at any time via View > Page > Bleed. Once enabled, ensure any background colors, patterns, or images extend completely to this outer dashed line, while keeping critical text and logos inside the safe margin (typically 0.125" / 3 mm inside the page edge).
Exporting Print-Ready PDFs with Bleed
Configuring the bleed on the canvas does not automatically export it. To ensure bleed is included in your production file:
- Click File > Publish to PDF (or File > Export and choose PDF).
- In the PDF export dialogue, click Settings.
- Switch to the Prepress tab.
- Check the Bleed limit option.
- Enter the identical measurement configured in your layout (e.g.,
0.125"or3.0 mm). - Optionally, check Crop marks under the Printer's Marks section if requested by your printer.
- Click OK, then choose your destination folder and click Save.
