How to Set Baseline Grid Alignment in CorelDRAW
Aligning text to a baseline grid in CorelDRAW ensures consistent vertical spacing across multiple columns, text frames, and pages, creating a clean and professional publication layout. This guide explains how to display the baseline grid, configure its spacing to match your typography, and align paragraph text frames to the grid.
Step 1: Turn on the Baseline Grid View
Before aligning your text, make the baseline grid visible on your workspace:
- Click on the View menu at the top of the screen.
- Hover over Grid.
- Select Baseline Grid to toggle the visibility on.
(Note: The grid will only appear on the screen if you are zoomed in closely enough, based on your grid threshold settings.)
Step 2: Configure Baseline Grid Settings
To ensure your text aligns properly, the grid spacing should match your paragraph text's line spacing (leading).
- Go to Tools > Options (or press Ctrl + J).
- In the Options dialog box, navigate to Document > Grid.
- Under the Baseline Grid section, configure the
following options:
- Spacing: Set the distance between grid lines to match your paragraph leading (for example, if your font size is 10 pt with 14 pt leading, set spacing to 14 pt).
- Start from top: Set the vertical offset from the top edge of the page where the grid should begin.
- Show grid at zoom: Adjust the minimum zoom percentage required to display the grid on screen.
- Color: Choose a custom line color or opacity for better visibility.
- Click OK to apply the changes.
Step 3: Align Paragraph Text to the Grid
The baseline grid only applies to paragraph (frame) text, not artistic text.
- Select the Pick tool or the Text tool and click on the paragraph text frame you want to align.
- Open the Text docker/inspector by going to Window > Dockers > Text (or pressing Ctrl + T).
- Switch to the Paragraph tab within the Text docker.
- Locate the Align to baseline grid toggle button (an icon showing lines of text aligned to horizontal rules) and click it to activate alignment.
Once enabled, the baselines of the text lines inside the frame will automatically snap to the nearest baseline grid line. If the text spacing looks too wide, verify that your text leading value is smaller than or equal to the baseline grid spacing value.
