How to Separate a Drop Shadow in CorelDRAW

Separating a drop shadow from its parent object in CorelDRAW allows you to edit, transform, or export the shadow independently as a standalone raster bitmap. This guide covers the quickest methods to break the shadow apart using keyboard shortcuts, the main menu, and the context menu, enabling advanced manipulation such as reshaping, powerclipping, or adjusting individual layer properties without altering the original shape or text.

Method 1: Using the Keyboard Shortcut (Fastest)

  1. Select the Pick Tool from the toolbox on the left.
  2. Click directly on the drop shadow to select the drop shadow group.
  3. Press Ctrl + K (Windows) or Cmd + K (Mac).
  4. Click anywhere outside the workspace to deselect everything.
  5. Click directly on the shadow to move or edit it independently from the source object.

Method 2: Using the Object Menu

  1. Using the Pick Tool, select the object containing the drop shadow.
  2. Go to the top menu bar and click on Object.
  3. Choose Break Drop Shadow Apart (in some versions, labeled as Break Drop Shadow Group Apart).
  4. Click an empty area of your canvas to clear the selection.
  5. Select the shadow or the object individually to verify they are separated.

Method 3: Using the Right-Click Context Menu

  1. Ensure the Pick Tool is active.
  2. Right-click directly on the shaded area of the drop shadow, avoiding the center of the primary object.
  3. From the context menu, select Break Drop Shadow Apart.
  4. The shadow is now detached and functions as a standard, transparent bitmap.

Working with the Separated Shadow

Once separated, the drop shadow becomes an independent 300 DPI (or your document's default resolution) CMYK or RGB bitmap. You can now:

  • Apply a PowerClip: Place the separated shadow inside containers or frames without affecting the parent vector.
  • Transform Freely: Scale, skew, mirror, or rotate the shadow independently to create custom perspective effects.
  • Apply Bitmap Effects: Add blur, color adjustments, or creative filters via the Effects > Bitmap menu.
