How to Recover Corrupted CDR Files in CorelDRAW

Encountering a corrupted CDR file in CorelDRAW can disrupt your workflow, but several proven methods can restore your lost artwork. This guide outlines step-by-step solutions to recover damaged CorelDRAW files, ranging from native backup and autosave retrievals to file structure extraction using ZIP utilities and importing into blank workspaces.

1. Recover from the Backup File (.BAK)

CorelDRAW automatically creates a backup file when you save changes to an existing drawing if the backup feature is enabled.

  1. Navigate to the folder where the original corrupted CDR file is stored.
  2. Look for a file named Backup_of_[filename].cdr.
  3. Double-click the file to open it in CorelDRAW, or rename the file extension to a standard .cdr name and open it normally.

2. Retrieve from the Autosave or Temp Folder

If CorelDRAW crashed while you were working, an autosaved version may exist in your system's temporary directory.

  1. Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog box.
  2. Type %temp% and press Enter.
  3. Sort the files by Date modified to see the most recent files.
  4. Search for files beginning with AutoBackup_of_ or files with a .cdr or .tmp extension.
  5. Copy the relevant file to your desktop, change its file extension to .cdr, and attempt to open it in CorelDRAW.

3. Extract the Drawing Using a ZIP Utility

Modern CDR files (CorelDRAW X4 and later) are compressed archives containing XML files and media. You can often salvage the drawing data by treating the file as a zip folder.

  1. Make a copy of the corrupted .cdr file to prevent further damage.
  2. Right-click the copied file, select Rename, and change the extension from .cdr to .zip.
  3. Extract the contents using Windows Explorer, 7-Zip, or WinRAR.
  4. Open the extracted folder and navigate to the content folder.
  5. Locate the riffData.cdr file.
  6. Open CorelDRAW, create a new document, and try dragging the riffData.cdr file directly onto the canvas.

4. Import the Corrupted File into a Blank Document

Sometimes CorelDRAW fails to launch a document directly due to corrupted page setup data, but it can still read the vector elements via the Import command.

  1. Open CorelDRAW and create a New Document.
  2. Go to File > Import (or press Ctrl + I).
  3. Select the corrupted .cdr file and click Import.
  4. Click on the workspace to place the imported objects.
  5. Save the new document under a different name.

5. Restore Using Windows File History

If you have Windows File History or System Restore points active, you can revert the file to an uncorrupted state.

  1. Right-click the corrupted CDR file and select Properties.
  2. Click on the Previous Versions tab.
  3. Select a version of the file created before the corruption occurred.
  4. Click Restore to overwrite the file, or Restore To to save the working version in a different location.
