How to Record a Macro in CorelDRAW

Automating repetitive tasks in CorelDRAW can significantly speed up your graphic design workflow. By using CorelDRAW's built-in macro recording tools powered by Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), you can capture a sequence of manual operations—such as formatting, resizing, or aligning objects—and convert them into a reusable script without writing any code. This guide details the essential steps to prepare your workspace, record your actions, save the macro, and execute it on future projects.

Step 1: Display the Macro Controls

To access the recording controls quickly, ensure the macro interface is visible in your workspace:

  1. Navigate to the top menu and select Window.
  2. Hover over Toolbars and check Macros (or Scripts in newer versions of CorelDRAW).
  3. Alternatively, open the dedicated docker by going to Tools > Scripts (or Macros) > Scripts Docker.

Step 2: Start Recording

Once the controls are available, initialize the recording process:

  1. Click the Record button (indicated by a circle icon) on the Macro toolbar, or select Tools > Scripts > Record Script.
  2. In the Record Macro dialog box, enter a distinct name for your script in the Macro name field.
  3. Choose where to save the macro using the Store macro in dropdown. Selecting GlobalMacros.gms makes the script accessible across all future documents, while saving it to the active document limits its use to that specific file.
  4. Add an optional description to remind yourself what the macro does, then click OK to begin recording.

Step 3: Execute Your Design Actions

CorelDRAW will now monitor and translate supported user actions into VBA commands:

  1. Perform the exact sequence of actions you want to automate, such as drawing shapes, modifying outline widths, applying specific color fills, or aligning elements.
  2. Avoid unnecessary canvas clicks, zooming, or panning, as these view-related actions do not translate into macro commands and can disrupt execution flow.

Step 4: Stop the Recording

Conclude the macro capture as soon as your sequence is complete:

  1. Click the Stop button (indicated by a square icon) on the Macro toolbar.
  2. Alternatively, open the top menu and click Tools > Scripts > Stop Recording.
  3. The script is automatically compiled and saved in the location chosen in Step 2.

Step 5: Test and Run the Recorded Macro

Verify that the recorded steps function as intended:

  1. Open a new document or set up the starting conditions required by your macro.
  2. Open the Scripts Manager via Tools > Scripts > Scripts.
  3. Locate your newly created macro in the folder structure (usually under GlobalMacros > RecordedMacros).
  4. Select the macro and click the Run button at the bottom of the docker, or double-click the macro name to execute the actions automatically.
