How to Open InDesign Files in CorelDRAW

Opening Adobe InDesign files (.INDD) or exchange layouts (.IDML) in CorelDRAW requires using intermediate exchange formats, as CorelDRAW cannot directly open native InDesign proprietary files. This article explains the most reliable workflows for migrating your InDesign layouts to CorelDRAW by exporting through PDF and EPS formats, along with essential tips for preserving vector graphics, text, and layout integrity.

Why Direct Import Isn't Supported

CorelDRAW does not have a native filter to read Adobe InDesign's proprietary .INDD or .IDML files directly. To transfer your work without rebuilding it from scratch, you must export the layout from InDesign into an open vector format that CorelDRAW can interpret accurately.

The standard and most accurate method to move layouts from InDesign to CorelDRAW is exporting to a high-quality PDF.

  1. Prepare the Layout in InDesign:
    • Open your document in Adobe InDesign.
    • If you need to edit the typography in CorelDRAW, ensure the fonts are installed on the target machine. If text preservation is strictly visual, consider converting text to outlines (Type > Create Outlines).
  2. Export the PDF:
    • Go to File > Export.
    • Set Save as type to Adobe PDF (Print).
    • Choose the High Quality Print or PDF/X-1a:2001 preset. PDF/X formats flatten transparency and lock in layout elements reliably.
    • Click Export.
  3. Open in CorelDRAW:
    • Open CorelDRAW.
    • Go to File > Open or File > Import.
    • Select your exported PDF file.
    • In the PDF Import dialog, choose whether to import text as Text (editable typography) or Curves (vector shapes).
    • Click OK to place the pages into your workspace.

Method 2: Export as EPS (For Single-Page or Vector Art)

If you are working with vector illustrations, logos, or single-page layouts, the EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) format serves as an effective alternative.

  1. Export from InDesign:
    • Go to File > Export.
    • Under Save as type, select PostScript File or export via print to a PostScript/EPS driver, or use File > Export > EPS (available in earlier versions or via dedicated script).
    • Ensure color output matches your target color space (CMYK for print, RGB for digital).
  2. Import into CorelDRAW:
    • In CorelDRAW, choose File > Import.
    • Select the file and choose Import as editable vector.
    • Click to position the layout on the canvas.

Managing Layout Elements After Import

Once imported into CorelDRAW, review the following settings to ensure output accuracy:

  • Ungroup Objects: Elements imported from PDF are typically placed in nested groups. Select the artwork and press Ctrl + U (Ungroup) or Ctrl + Shift + U (Ungroup All) to access individual objects.
  • Color Profiles: Verify that your color spaces match. Go to Tools > Color Management in CorelDRAW to align the CMYK/RGB profiles with those used in the original InDesign document.
  • Text Flow: InDesign uses linked text frames. When imported into CorelDRAW, text often converts into separate artistic text blocks or paragraph frames. Inspect multi-column layouts to ensure there are no unintended text overlaps or line wraps.
