How to Manage Hyphenation in CorelDRAW
Hyphenation management in CorelDRAW is a typographic feature that controls how and when words break across line endings within paragraph text. This guide explains what hyphenation management is, why it is crucial for professional document layout, and how to configure automatic settings, adjust hyphenation zones, and insert manual hyphens to achieve balanced, readable text.
Understanding Hyphenation in CorelDRAW
Hyphenation management dictates how CorelDRAW handles words that are too long to fit at the end of a text line. Instead of forcing the entire word onto the next line—which can create large, unsightly gaps in justified text or an overly ragged right margin—the software splits the word across two lines using a hyphen character according to specific linguistic rules.
In CorelDRAW, hyphenation applies exclusively to Paragraph Text (text placed inside a bounding frame) and is not available for Artistic Text.
Accessing Hyphenation Settings
To configure hyphenation for a document or specific text frame:
- Select the paragraph text or text frame using the Pick Tool or Text Tool.
- Open the Text menu from the top menu bar.
- Select Hyphenation (or Hyphenation Settings depending on your CorelDRAW version).
- Check the box labeled Automatically hyphenate paragraph text to activate the feature.
You can also access hyphenation rules through the Text Properties docker (or Inspector) under the Paragraph tab.
Key Hyphenation Rules and Parameters
CorelDRAW provides several controls to fine-tune how text breaks:
- Minimum Word Length: Specifies the minimum number of characters a word must contain before CorelDRAW is allowed to split it. This prevents short words from being broken awkwardly.
- Minimum Characters Before Hyphen: Determines how many letters must remain on the first line before the hyphen appears. Standard typography typically requires at least two or three letters.
- Minimum Characters After Hyphen: Sets how many letters must carry over to the following line. This prevents single-letter carryovers, known as "runts."
- Hyphenation Zone: Applicable mainly to unjustified (ragged-right) text, this defines the distance from the right margin within which hyphenation can occur. A larger zone allows more variation in line length with fewer hyphens; a smaller zone creates a tighter margin with more hyphens.
- Hyphen Limit: Controls the maximum number of consecutive lines that are permitted to end in a hyphen. Setting a limit prevents "hyphen ladders," which distract readers and make text harder to scan.
Optional (Discretionary) Hyphens
In addition to global automatic rules, CorelDRAW supports manual hyphenation control:
- Optional Hyphen: Press Ctrl + - (hyphen) inside a word to insert an invisible break point. CorelDRAW will only split the word and show the hyphen if the word falls at the end of a line. If subsequent edits push the word elsewhere, the hyphen remains hidden.
- Non-Breaking Hyphen: Press Ctrl + Shift + - to insert a hyphen that prevents a compound word (like "e-commerce" or a phone number) from breaking across lines.
