How to Import Custom Palettes in CorelDRAW
Importing custom color palettes into CorelDRAW allows designers to maintain brand consistency, streamline workflows, and utilize specialized color sets like Pantone libraries or client-specific swatches. This guide provides clear, step-by-step instructions on how to load external palette files—such as XML, CPL, and ASE formats—directly into CorelDRAW using the Palettes docker.
Supported Palette Formats
CorelDRAW supports several palette file extensions, including:
- CorelDRAW XML Palette (.xml): The standard format used by modern versions of CorelDRAW.
- Corel Color Palette (.cpl): The legacy format used in older releases.
- Adobe Swatch Exchange (.ase) and Color (.aco): Common formats shared across design suites.
Step-by-Step Import Instructions
- Open the Palettes Docker
- Launch CorelDRAW and open an existing document or create a new one.
- Go to the top menu and select Window.
- Hover over Dockers (or Inspectors on macOS) and click on Palettes. The Palettes panel will appear on the right side of the screen.
- Access the Palette Options
- In the Palettes docker, locate the toolbar at the top or bottom of the panel.
- Click the Palette Options icon (represented by a folder icon or a gear/flyout menu, depending on your CorelDRAW version).
- Select Open Palette... from the dropdown menu.
- Locate and Select Your Palette File
- A file browser window will open.
- Use the Files of type dropdown at the bottom of the window to select the format of your file (e.g., XML, CPL, or All Palette Files).
- Navigate to the folder where your custom palette file is saved.
- Select the file and click Open.
- Display the Palette in Your Workspace
- Once imported, the custom palette will be listed under the Custom Palettes or Palettes folder inside the docker.
- Check the box next to your imported palette's name to display it along the border of your drawing window.
- To keep the palette docked on your screen permanently, drag its title bar to your preferred edge of the application workspace (right, left, or bottom).
