How to Import CSV in CorelDRAW for Variable Text
This guide explains how to use CorelDRAW's Print Merge feature to import a CSV spreadsheet for variable text generation. Utilizing variable data allows you to quickly automate the production of personalized items such as badges, certificates, labels, and numbered tickets without manually editing each document.
1. Prepare Your CSV File
Before opening CorelDRAW, ensure your data is properly formatted in a spreadsheet editor like Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets:
- Place descriptive column headers in the first row (e.g., "FirstName", "LastName", "IDNumber").
- Fill out the rows with your variable text.
- Save or export the file as **CSV (Comma delimited) (*.csv). If your data contains special characters or non-Latin alphabets, save it with UTF-8** encoding.
2. Open the Print Merge Tool in CorelDRAW
- Open your design template in CorelDRAW.
- Go to the top menu and select File > Print Merge > Create/Load Print Merge.
- In modern versions of CorelDRAW, this opens the Print Merge docker/inspector on the right side of the screen.
3. Import the CSV File
- In the Print Merge panel, click the Import File button (or choose "Import text from a file" if prompted by an older wizard).
- Set the file format filter to **Comma-separated Files (*.csv)**.
- Browse your computer, select your prepared CSV file, and click Open.
- CorelDRAW will read the columns as merge fields and the rows as individual records. Verify that your data fields appear correctly in the list.
4. Insert Variable Text Fields into the Design
- In the Print Merge docker, select the field you want to place from the field list (e.g., "FirstName").
- Click the Insert Selected Field button. A
placeholder text block (e.g.,
<FirstName>) will appear on your canvas. - Move, resize, and style this placeholder using standard CorelDRAW text tools. Choose your desired font, color, alignment, and size. Any formatting applied to the placeholder will apply to all generated records.
- Repeat this step for any additional columns you wish to include in your design.
5. Generate the Merged Output
Once all placeholders are formatted and positioned, choose how to output the data:
- Merge to New Document: Click this button in the Print Merge panel to generate a new CorelDRAW file containing a unique page for every row in your CSV. This allows you to inspect, fine-tune, or save the pages before printing or exporting to PDF.
- Perform Print Merge: Click this option to send the merged records directly to your printer or to the "Print to PDF" driver without creating a massive multi-page design file first.
