How to Format UPC Barcodes in CorelDRAW

CorelDRAW includes an integrated Barcode Wizard that simplifies creating, sizing, and styling industry-standard UPC barcodes for product packaging and retail applications. This guide provides a straightforward walk-through of accessing the Barcode Wizard, configuring standard UPC-A or UPC-E parameters, adjusting visual formatting such as fonts and dimensions, and converting the output to vector paths to guarantee precise print quality and high scannability.

1. Open the Barcode Wizard

  1. Launch CorelDRAW and open your active project.
  2. Navigate to the top menu bar and select Object > Insert > Barcode (in older versions, go to Edit > Insert Barcode).
  3. The Barcode Wizard dialog will appear on your screen.

2. Choose the UPC Format and Input Data

  1. In the Choose standard industry format drop-down menu, select either:
    • UPC(A): The standard 12-digit barcode used for general retail products.
    • UPC(E): A compressed 6-to-8-digit barcode used for smaller retail items.
  2. Enter your numerical product code into the data entry field. CorelDRAW automatically calculates the final check digit; enter the required 11 digits for UPC-A, and the system verifies the checksum.
  3. Click Next to proceed to the formatting settings.

3. Configure Dimensions and Scannability Settings

To ensure the barcode registers accurately on retail scanners, adjust the visual and physical properties:

  • Resolution: Set the printer resolution (typically 300 DPI or higher for commercial print).
  • Magnification: Maintain scale between 80% and 200%. Standard retail compliance guidelines generally discourage scaling below 80% (0.8x) or above 200% (2.0x).
  • Bar Width Reduction (BWR): Apply a slight reduction (usually 1 to 2 mils) if your printing method causes ink spread (such as flexography). For standard digital or offset printing, leave this at the default setting.
  • Aspect Ratio: Keep the height-to-width ratio locked to prevent distorting the vertical scanning bars.
  • Click Next when dimensional settings are complete.

4. Format Text and Human-Readable Characters

  1. In the final wizard screen, adjust the text options for the numbers printed beneath the bars:
    • Choose standard OCR-B or Arial fonts for maximum legibility.
    • Toggle the placement of the check digit and country codes according to your packaging template.
  2. Click Finish. The barcode is inserted directly onto your active canvas as an embedded OLE object.

While the embedded barcode can be resized directly, converting it to pure vector paths ensures colors remain 100% K (Black) and prevents output issues during pre-press:

  1. Select the newly inserted barcode object.
  2. Cut the object by pressing Ctrl + X.
  3. Go to Edit > Paste Special.
  4. Choose Picture (Metafile) and click OK.
  5. With the barcode selected, press Ctrl + U to ungroup the objects.
  6. Select the bars and confirm the color fill is set to 100% Process Black (CMYK: 0, 0, 0, 100) rather than a composite rich black.

Essential Rules for UPC Placement

  • Quiet Zones: Maintain a clear white margin on both the left and right sides of the barcode. Truncating these margins will cause scanner errors.
  • Color Contrast: Always print dark bars on a light, solid, non-metallic background. Never invert colors (light bars on a dark background) for UPC codes.
  • Orientation: When placing on curved surfaces like cans or bottles, orient the bars vertically (ladder style) rather than horizontally (picket fence) to avoid barcode distortion along the curve.
