How to Export TIFF with Layers in CorelDRAW
Preserving layer information when exporting TIFF files from CorelDRAW requires configuring specific rasterization and formatting controls during the export process. This guide details the exact export settings needed to retain layer data, prevent unwanted flattening, and ensure full compatibility with other graphics software like Adobe Photoshop.
1. Initiate the Export Dialog
- Open your document in CorelDRAW and select the objects or artboard you want to output.
- Go to File > Export (or press Ctrl + E).
- In the export window, set the file format to TIF - TIFF Bitmap.
- Check the Selected only box if you only want to export specific elements, then click Export.
2. Configure the "Convert to Bitmap" Settings
The first dialog controls how vector objects are rasterized into bitmap data:
- Color Mode: Choose RGB Color (24-bit) or CMYK Color (32-bit). Do not select Black and White (1-bit) or Paletted (8-bit), as these modes automatically flatten all graphic information.
- Transparent Background: Check this box. Enabling transparency ensures individual layer boundaries do not gain a solid matte background.
- Resolution: Set the resolution to your desired target (typically 300 DPI for print or 72–96 DPI for web).
3. Apply TIFF-Specific Layer Settings
In the secondary TIFF options window:
- Maintain Layers: Ensure the Maintain layers checkbox is enabled. This instructs the export engine to write Photoshop-compatible layer tags into the TIFF metadata rather than merging the graphic into a single background plate.
- Compression: Select LZW or ZIP. Both are lossless compression algorithms that maintain image integrity and layer definitions. Avoid using JPEG compression inside a TIFF container, as lossy compression can degrade transparency masks and blend modes.
- Uncompressed Option: If downstream applications fail to read your multi-layer TIFF, set compression to None. While this significantly increases file size, it maximizes compatibility across non-Corel applications.
4. Alternative Method via Corel PHOTO-PAINT
If your version of CorelDRAW groups all vector elements into a single composite layer during direct vector-to-TIFF export:
- Select your artwork and copy it (Ctrl + C).
- Open Corel PHOTO-PAINT and paste as a new document with layers preserved.
- Choose File > Save As, select TIFF, and ensure Maintain Layers is selected in the save options. PHOTO-PAINT natively writes complex, multi-layered Adobe-compatible TIFF files with full layer blending modes intact.
