How to Edit Vector Paths in CorelDRAW
Editing vector paths in CorelDRAW allows you to refine shapes, adjust illustrations, and perfect custom lettering with precision. This guide covers the essential steps for manipulating paths, including selecting the right tools, modifying and converting nodes, reshaping curve segments with control handles, and joining or separating path segments to achieve clean, accurate vector artwork.
1. Select the Shape Tool
The primary tool for vector editing in CorelDRAW is the Shape Tool (shortcut: F10).
- If your object is a basic geometric shape (like a rectangle or ellipse), you must first convert it into an editable path by selecting it and pressing Ctrl + Q (Convert to Curves) or clicking Object > Convert to Curves.
- Once converted, click the Shape Tool on the left toolbar and click on the outline of your object to reveal its nodes and path segments.
2. Add, Delete, and Move Nodes
Nodes are the anchor points that define the shape of your path.
- Move a node: Click and drag any node to a new position.
- Add a node: Double-click directly on the path where you want the new point, or click the path once and click the Add Nodes (+) button on the property bar.
- Delete a node: Double-click an existing node, or select it and press the Delete key. You can also use the Delete Nodes (-) button on the property bar.
3. Change Node Types
Changing node types alters how curves behave on either side of the point. Select a node with the Shape tool and choose one of the following from the top property bar:
- Cusp Node: Creates sharp corners. The control handles move independently, allowing you to create sharp angles or abrupt transitions.
- Smooth Node: Creates a rounded transition. Moving one control handle adjusts the angle of the opposite handle while allowing different handle lengths.
- Symmetrical Node: Ensures the curve is identical on both sides. Moving or resizing one handle mirrors the exact angle and length on the opposite side.
4. Adjust Segments and Control Handles
You can reshape paths directly or via control handles that appear when a node is selected.
- Drag segments directly: With the Shape Tool, click and drag any line or curve directly to reshape it without touching the nodes.
- Use control handles: Drag the blue arrow handles extending from a selected node to adjust the curvature and direction of the path.
- Convert segment types: Select a segment and click Convert to Line to make it perfectly straight, or Convert to Curve to add curvature.
5. Join, Break, and Close Paths
Complex paths often require splitting or connecting segments.
- Break a path: Select a node and click the Break Curve button on the property bar. This splits the node into two separate, overlapping endpoints.
- Join two nodes: Drag one open end-node over another until the cursor changes, or select two endpoints and click Join Two Nodes.
- Auto-close paths: Click Close Curve on the property bar to automatically draw a straight segment between the start and end nodes of an open path.
