How to Edit Non-Destructive Effects in CorelDRAW
This guide explains how to access, adjust, and manage live non-destructive effects in CorelDRAW. Non-destructive effects allow you to apply bitmap and vector filters to objects without permanently altering the underlying artwork. By utilizing the Properties docker, you can revisit these settings at any point in your design process to tweak parameters, change stacking order, or remove effects entirely.
Accessing the Properties Docker
To re-edit an applied effect, you must work through the Properties docker (known as the Object Properties docker in older versions).
- Click Window in the top menu.
- Navigate to Dockers (or Inspectors on macOS).
- Select Properties (or press Alt + Enter).
Selecting and Editing the Effect
- Select the object containing the effect using the Pick tool.
- In the Properties docker, click the FX (Effects) tab located at the top of the docker panel.
- You will see a list of all live effects applied to the active selection (such as Blur, Sharpen, or Color Balance).
- Double-click the effect you want to modify, or click the Edit icon (pencil) next to the effect's name.
- The settings dialog box for that specific effect will open. Adjust the sliders, values, or options as needed.
- Click OK to apply the updated parameters.
Managing Effect Hierarchy and Visibility
The FX tab also provides controls to adjust how effects interact with one another:
- Toggle Visibility: Click the eye icon next to any effect to temporarily hide or reveal it without deleting it.
- Reorder Effects: Click and drag an effect up or down within the list to change the rendering order. This can significantly alter the visual outcome, as effects are rendered from top to bottom.
- Delete an Effect: Select the effect within the list and click the Trash bin icon at the bottom of the FX panel to permanently remove it while keeping the original object intact.
Re-editing Interactive Tool Effects
For native interactive vector effects—such as Drop Shadows, Contours, Blends, and Extrusions:
- Select the object with the corresponding tool active (e.g., select the Drop Shadow tool from the toolbox).
- The interactive handles will reappear on the workspace, and the contextual Property Bar at the top of the screen will display all original settings.
- Modify the values on the Property Bar or drag the on-screen control nodes to update the effect in real time.
