How to Crop an Image in CorelDRAW

Cropping an image in CorelDRAW allows you to remove unwanted outer areas, emphasize a focal subject, and tailor your graphics to fit specific design dimensions. This guide explains how to quickly crop images using three primary methods: the dedicated Crop Tool for standard rectangular trimming, the Shape Tool for non-destructive adjustments, and the PowerClip feature for cropping images into custom shapes.

Method 1: Using the Crop Tool

The Crop Tool is the fastest way to remove outer edges from a bitmap or vector graphic.

  1. Select the Image: Click on the image you want to crop using the Pick Tool. If you do not select the object first, CorelDRAW may crop everything on your active workspace.
  2. Activate the Crop Tool: Select the Crop Tool from the toolbox on the left side of the screen (grouped under the Shape Tool flyout).
  3. Define the Crop Area: Click and drag a marquee box over the portion of the image you want to keep.
  4. Adjust the Dimensions: Use the boundary handles to resize or reposition the crop box. You can also rotate the crop area by clicking inside it and dragging the corner rotation handles.
  5. Apply the Crop: Double-click inside the crop box or press Enter on your keyboard to finalize the crop.

Method 2: Using the Shape Tool (Non-Destructive)

The Shape Tool lets you crop bitmaps non-destructively by altering the bounding nodes, preserving the original image data in case you need to restore it later.

  1. Select the Image: Use the Pick Tool to highlight your bitmap image.
  2. Choose the Shape Tool: Click the Shape Tool in the toolbox or press F10. Four corner nodes will appear on the image boundary.
  3. Adjust the Nodes: Click and drag any corner node inward to trim away parts of the image.
  4. Create Custom Boundaries: Double-click anywhere along the bounding line to add new nodes, allowing you to crop around complex or irregular outlines.

Method 3: Cropping into Shapes Using PowerClip

If you need to crop an image into a circle, star, or custom vector silhouette, use the PowerClip feature.

  1. Draw Your Shape: Use the shape tools (such as the Ellipse Tool or Polygon Tool) to draw the shape you want to use as a container.
  2. Position the Objects: Move the shape directly over the part of the image you wish to retain.
  3. Apply PowerClip:
    • Select the image.
    • Go to the top menu and select Object > PowerClip > Place Inside Frame.
    • Your cursor will turn into a black arrow; click on the vector shape you drew.
  4. Edit the Content: To reposition or resize the image inside the shape, hold Ctrl and click inside the frame, make your adjustments, and then hold Ctrl and click outside the frame to finish.
