How to Create Vector Patterns in CorelDRAW

Creating vector patterns in CorelDRAW allows you to generate seamless, infinitely scalable designs for textiles, backgrounds, and packaging. This guide outlines the straightforward process of designing a repeating motif, saving it as a custom vector fill, applying it to your artwork, and fine-tuning its scale and alignment for a professional finish.

1. Design Your Base Motif

Start by drawing the elements you want to repeat using CorelDRAW's vector tools (such as the Pen, Rectangle, or Ellipse tools).

  • Draw a square using the Rectangle tool (F6) while holding Ctrl to serve as your tile boundary.
  • Place your artwork inside the square.
  • If you want a seamless repeating pattern where elements cross the edges, duplicate elements that touch the left edge and align them precisely to the right edge (and similarly from top to bottom) using the Transform docker or exact coordinate inputs.
  • Remove the outline and fill of the bounding square if you do not want a solid background color.

2. Create the Vector Pattern Fill

Once your artwork is arranged:

  1. Select all the elements comprising the design and group them by pressing Ctrl + G.
  2. Go to the top menu and select Tools > Create > Pattern Fill (in some versions, navigate to Object > Create > Pattern Fill).
  3. In the dialog box that appears, select Vector as the pattern type and click OK.
  4. Your cursor will turn into a crosshair. Click and drag a marquee precisely over your tile boundary.
  5. Click Accept in the confirmation prompt.
  6. In the Save Pattern window, assign a name, category, and tags to your pattern, then save it to your local assets.

3. Apply the Pattern to an Object

To use your new pattern:

  1. Draw the target object you want to fill (such as a large rectangle or complex shape).
  2. Select the Interactive Fill tool (G) from the toolbox on the left.
  3. On the property bar at the top of the screen, click the Vector pattern fill icon.
  4. Click the Fill picker dropdown and choose your newly saved pattern from the Personal or Custom category. CorelDRAW will instantly populate the object with your repeating vector pattern.

4. Adjust and Transform the Pattern

After applying the pattern, interactive control handles will appear over the object:

  • Scale: Drag the corner square handle to enlarge or shrink the individual pattern tiles.
  • Rotate and Skew: Click the circular handle to rotate or slant the pattern grid.
  • Move: Drag the center handle to reposition the pattern's starting point within the shape.
  • Tiling Offsets: Open the Properties docker (Alt + Enter), navigate to the Fill tab, and adjust the Row/Column Offset to create staggered layouts like brick or half-drop patterns.
