How to Create Repeating Headers in CorelDRAW
CorelDRAW utilizes dedicated Master Page layers within its Objects docker to create and manage repeating headers across multi-page documents. By anchoring graphical and text elements to global master layers, designers can ensure consistent headers on all pages or alternate layouts between odd and even pages automatically. This guide details the core master page features in CorelDRAW that facilitate repeating header design, dynamic page numbering, and layer controls.
The Master Page System and Objects Docker
The foundation of repeating headers in CorelDRAW is the Master Page, accessed via the Objects docker (Window > Dockers > Objects). Unlike standard page-specific layers, objects placed on a Master Page layer act as a persistent background or foreground template across the entire document. When you place a header graphic, company logo, or title text on a master layer, it automatically projects across every page in the file without the need to manually duplicate elements.
All, Odd, and Even Master Layers
CorelDRAW provides granular control over how repeating headers appear throughout facing-page layouts, such as books, magazines, and booklets:
- Master Layer (All Pages): Any object placed here repeats across every page in the document. This is ideal for single-sided documents or uniform headers that do not require layout shifts.
- Master Layer (Odd Pages): Elements placed here appear only on right-hand (recto) pages. This feature allows you to right-align page titles, place chapter names, or position logos on the outer edge.
- Master Layer (Even Pages): Elements placed here display exclusively on left-hand (verso) pages, allowing you to mirror the layout of the odd pages for professional editorial design.
To create alternating headers, click the New Master Layer (Odd Pages) or New Master Layer (Even Pages) icons at the bottom of the Objects docker and design your respective headers on those layers.
Dynamic Page Numbering in Headers
A key feature of repeating headers is the integration of dynamic text fields. Rather than manually typing page numbers, you can insert an automatic page number token directly into your master header text box.
Navigate to Layout > Insert Page Number > On Active Layer while working on your master header layer. CorelDRAW automatically calculates and displays the correct consecutive page number on each individual page, maintaining the unified styling defined on the master page.
Layer Controls: Locking, Visibility, and Stacking
CorelDRAW provides several utility controls to prevent accidental edits and manage visual hierarchy:
- Locking Layers: Clicking the padlock icon next to your master header layer locks the content in place. This prevents you from inadvertently moving header elements while editing standard page content.
- Stacking Order: Master layers can be moved above or below standard layers. Placing the master header layer at the very top ensures headers remain visible over colored backgrounds or imported imagery on individual pages.
- Export and Print Toggles: Individual master layers can be toggled to make headers visible on-screen but hidden from the final print or PDF output, which is useful for internal document tracking and slug lines.
