How to Create Perforation Cut Lines in CorelDRAW

This guide explains how to set up accurate perforation cut lines for packaging designs in CorelDRAW. You will learn how to create a dedicated spot color for digital cutters, apply custom dashed line styles for perforations, and configure overprint settings to ensure seamless production without disrupting underlying artwork.

1. Create a Dedicated Spot Color for the Cut Path

Digital cutting plotters and RIP software identify cut paths through distinct spot colors.

  1. Open the Palettes docker by navigating to Window > Dockers > Palettes.
  2. Click the menu icon in the dock and select Palettes > New Palette, naming it something recognizable like Packaging Cuts.
  3. Double-click the palette to add a new color, or select the Color Palette Manager.
  4. Set the color model to Spot Color.
  5. Name the color appropriately based on your cutting machine's software (common names include PerfCut, Perforation, or ThruCut).
  6. Assign a high-visibility color, such as 100% Magenta or 100% Cyan, to easily distinguish it from artwork.

2. Draw and Position the Perforation Line

  1. Use the Freehand Tool (F5), 2-Point Line, or Pen Tool to draw the vector path where the perforation should occur (such as a tear strip or fold-assist line).
  2. Align the path accurately to your packaging dieline using the Align and Distribute docker (Ctrl + Shift + A).
  3. Ensure the path is an open or closed vector line, depending on whether it is an internal tear line or a perimeter cut.

3. Configure the Outline Pen Settings

  1. Select the vector path and press F12 to open the Outline Pen dialog.
  2. In the Color dropdown, assign your newly created PerfCut spot color.
  3. Set the Width to Hairline (or the specific width required by your cutting hardware, often 0.1 mm or 0.25 pt).
  4. Select the Style dropdown to choose a dashed line pattern.
  5. To define custom cut-to-tie ratios, click Edit Style. Adjust the slider to set the length of the cut versus the length of the uncut gap (bridge) holding the paperboard together. A common starting ratio for packaging is a 3 mm cut with a 1 mm gap.
  6. Click OK to apply the outline style.

4. Enable Overprint Outline

Packaging dielines must not knock out the background graphics during separation.

  1. Right-click the perforation line on your canvas.
  2. Select Overprint Outline from the context menu.
  3. Alternatively, check the Overprint outline box within the Outline Pen (F12) settings window.
  4. Verify by enabling View > Simulate Overprints to confirm that the underlying graphics remain visible beneath the perforated line.

5. Export for Print and Cut Production

  1. Go to File > Export or File > Publish to PDF.
  2. Select a print-ready standard such as PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4.
  3. Under the Color tab in the PDF settings, ensure that Output colors as is set to Native so the custom spot color does not convert to CMYK.
  4. Verify that Preserve document overprints is checked.
  5. Export the file and load it into your cutting software to map the spot color to the perforation tool.
