How to Create Custom Vector Pattern Fills in CorelDRAW

Creating custom vector pattern fills in CorelDRAW allows you to transform original vector artwork into seamless, infinitely scalable repeating patterns. This guide walks you through the entire process, from designing your initial vector tile and capturing it with the Pattern Fill tool to saving it in your personal asset library and applying it to your designs with precise scaling and alignment adjustments.

Step 1: Design Your Base Pattern Tile

  1. Open your workspace and create the vector elements you want to repeat using shapes, lines, or imported vector graphics.
  2. Arrange the elements so they work cohesively when tiled. If you want a seamless edge-to-edge pattern, ensure intersecting elements match up across the left-to-right and top-to-bottom boundaries.
  3. Group your artwork by selecting all the elements and pressing Ctrl + G to keep them aligned.

Step 2: Open the Pattern Fill Creator

  1. Go to the top menu bar and select Tools.
  2. Click Create, then choose Pattern Fill... from the submenu.
  3. In the dialog box that appears, select the Vector radio button.
  4. Click OK. Your cursor will change to a specialized crosshair cropping tool.

Step 3: Define the Pattern Bounds

  1. Click and drag a marquee box around the vector artwork you designed. This box defines the repeating boundary (tile size) of your pattern.
  2. Hold down the Alt key while dragging if you need to reposition the selection box.
  3. Once the box encompasses the desired tile area, release the mouse button and click Accept on the pop-up toolbar.

Step 4: Save the Vector Pattern

  1. After accepting the selection, the Save Pattern dialog box will appear.
  2. Assign a descriptive name to your pattern and enter any relevant tags or categories to make it easy to search for later.
  3. Choose where to save the pattern (typically in your personal fill library folder) and click Save.

Step 5: Apply and Customize the Fill

  1. Draw a new shape or select any existing vector object on your canvas that you want to fill.
  2. Select the Interactive Fill Tool from the left toolbox or press G on your keyboard.
  3. On the top Property Bar, click the Vector Pattern Fill icon.
  4. Open the Fill Picker dropdown and navigate to your saved pattern under the Personal category.
  5. Once applied, an interactive bounding box with control handles will appear over the shape.
    • Drag the square corner handles to resize the pattern tiles.
    • Drag the circular handle to rotate the pattern.
    • Drag the center node to shift the pattern offset.
